It is the ro sult of care, thought, industry and unceasing watchfulness, and is in deed, one of our highest dutios. It is not a "gathering up of fragments, that nothing be lost," but it is also a seeing that there are a few fragments to be taken care of-the opposite of wastefulness and extr" . agance; and it is only the mentally weak, who affect to despise and ridicule so excellent a quality. A thrifty, economical person can make one dollar go twice as far as a heedless, unthoughtful person will, Poverty need not go hand in hand with careless waste and shiftlessness, though it usually does. If ever thrift and good management are needed, i1 is where money is scarce. Never "pul your best foot forward" at the expenst of self-respect. ErTon:--Somo two years ago Superiuteudant Coward sent oircu lars to the County School Commis sioners, suggesting that the SEhool dlistricts were too largo to be pioperly cared for by one board of trtistees. Col. Rice is reported to be advocating the same idea. If I am rightly in formed this was discussed by the Teacher 'a Association abotit two vears ago at Pickens C. II. and Ea'ley, and met with but little opposition. It was an idea then, but is it so toW? In his annual report School Con missioner Mayfield, of G reenville, says: 'In my last yearr annual Eport. I sta ted that we had formed 26 new school 'districts. 'To this number we have added six this year, (188(), and ex pect to cstablish others next year. by the formation of these districts, cutting off enough territory with a pa tronage strong 'enough to support good and substantial schools, we find we put the patrons virtually in con trol of the schools. This being done, great rivally springs up in the dis tricts, and the public fund is much more readily supplemented. They find the school houses not good enough nor large enough for their pur)oses, and this rosults in the houses being repaired and enlarged or new ones built. The soledtion of teachers has become a matter of pride with them, and great caro and pains are taken to secure the best, a thing here-to - fore Unknown, and it exists to such an extent that we have had great trouble, and in fact been unable to supply them with the teachers they wanted. Thus we have, outside of Greenville city, thirty-two supple mental schools running from six to ten months in the year, one with three tea4hers, five with two teachers each, and the othei' with one each." I think this is a good idea, and if suggestions wo1Ild do any good, I would reconmend that the county be laid off in squares, commencing on the Anderson line, aIInd that each one shall contain sixteen square miles, and the school house be built as ne.ar the centre as possible, and that three trustees be appointed for each s'oh)ol (1istrict.
