;k. .. r _ .B. BOOGS & o., Proprietors. PIOUN T C. a., S. 0. THUlRSDAY, APRIL 21, 1847. Plekens County. From a letter published in this is sue, it seems necessary that we should occasionally set fojth- the adventa ges of our ou y. The o ' ate n the Piedmont l'elt -isahnost s gob:l, if not a little better than'' it had been made to order. The winters are comparitively mild, anything like a hard freeze seldom lasting above seven days, and these do not come more than three times in one winter. The fertile soil of the county is well adapted to raising wheat, corn, oats, rye, barley, clover, potatoes of all kinds, and no better grade of short staple cotton is over put on the mar ket than that from this county. Al kinds of apple, peaches, cherries, pears, apricots, quinces, figs and grapes are grown with success. The water almost without excep tion is pure, cold, and good, none of it from theesprings' and wells can be made more palatable by being- iced. The Saluda. on the east and the Keowee on the west of the c4mnty abound with shoals and furnish an al most unlimited supply of water pow er, besides twelve considerable creeks all of which have several good mill sites. The county is well timbered. Fire -wood in the four towns sells at, $1.00 per cord, 'and lumber at the mills from $6.00 to $10.00 per thousand feet. The population of the county is about 13,000 white. ntnd 4,000 col )rc, and a more orderly trustworthy set| of colored people cannot be found iii the Southern States. The Air Line )ivision of the Rich mond & Danville Racilroad runs twenty seven miles tlhrou.rh the coun ty. It is better equipped and does better service than any railroad he tween this and Chicago. The C\ln herland Gap roa1 is expecte(l in a few years to) cross the county af right angles with the Richmond & Dan ville. There are six Presbyt erian, fo:ir teen Methodist and 3.0 Baptist chuir dies, and about seventy-live school houses. It haes b)een nine years since any whiskey wvas legally sold1 in the county, and there is scarcely a mur mnur against the law. There is such unanimity on the subject that it has never been made an issue in any of our elections. The farming lands and stock gv'n erally have been greatly improved since the passage of the stock law e few years ago In this county the temperature of the air, the aptness of the soil for e'v ery species of grain, and the lu..;uri ance of vegetation, all display the lib erality of Nature, and tempt the in dustry of man. C. L. Il liigswor-th. The commodious two story dwelling was completed last k week, and is now under the painter's brush. The house is now occupied a by Mr. J. J. Wakelin, and his happy family, with whom we had the pleaa urc of dining on the 13th inst. The , other inprovremien s Ibesides the dwell- i ing in the way of buildings, consist, e of a set of most substantial stables, a bai1t of logs, suflicient for the accon- c molation of six hot ses in the base- v ment, and as many more on the first t lloor; a large corn crib made of hestnut-oak logs with convenient 1 ivagon room attachment, and a fowl 1 Eouse. The object of the greatest interest to those prosecuting the work of um proving, is a well sixty- eight feet deep, lifty-eight of Which has een driven through solid granite. When this is comnplet'd, the further improvement of the place will be an easy problem. t But if waler iS -0ot reached at the depth of seventy-five feet, the well will prove an invalual lo aid as a cia teri, which would be cap lle of sup plying a large family sith water for several weeks. Uut the present ne cessities of the case are fully met by' a clear, cold spring which gushes from the foot of the mountain. Mr. \Waklin has already beguni his o chard and vineyard, which with his energy and experience he is sure to make a Hiecess. The h<ose is provided with a cupo Ia, surroiuided by a veranda from ev cry side of which the most. extensive views can lie hiad---views surpassing in beauty andc( magnificence, anyin that can he obtiuned on the highest iioiun tain range, for there is nothing to in tercept hut the Blue llidgo Mon tans on the Nit Ii, and the far di:; tant horizo at al the otlier poiits of the+ coIpajlHS.
