The 'Now Iork Journal of Corn merco has lately published govere strong editori*1 articles showing thu dangers and evils of labor unions an'l the strikes immaged by them. The statemnenats and dcductionis in thesc articles are unquestionably true, but they consider only one side. Tha misery and loss resulting from the oppressions , carelesstoss or nisman agenent of napitulists have beei in the 'past, an( in the future may be far worse than the troubles aid losses caused I y labor uuions and strikes Capital and labor are only useful andi effcetive whei they vork togeth er, and they must so work. But while htuman nature remains as it is the weaker, on either side, is always exposed to oppressiont of the stronger. ('apital is an aggregation of dollars; labor is an aggregation .of inldi'idi als. The single indivituns as help less for the protection of his rights against capital as the single dollar would be against a host of men. It is no safer to give the employer absolute, tnchecked power over his labot ers than it is to give laborers the power to 'esceit real or supposed injuries by ruining employers. Inthe great majority of instances in this country etuployers are fair and hu mane and laborers are faithful and contented, but there are brutal and oppressive employers and exacting and unfaithful laborers, and it is the duty of both sides to guard against suih dangers. That is why labor unions in some form should eXist. The principle of disinterested ar bitration is the best vet known for the settlement of differences, and we believe it will be universally accepted in the course of time and events, and after the blunders and resulting dis asters such as have preceded the exe cution of every great reform and ad vanceO. Bcoctts, riots and violent interference with men who are wil ling to accept work as they get it are tyrannical and altogether wrong just as arbitrary cuts in wages an:lop pressive hours of work are cruel and wrong. A general agreement to fair arbitration backed by puiie senti ment would d1o away vithi the evil on both sides.--- Greenillle Xw.
