THE SENTINEL. J. E BO W4, Editor. Ja B. IOOS & Co., Proprictors. PICKENS.C. li.. S. C., TfUR8DAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1868. Prai4e Waiteth For Thee. Grover Cleveland, President, and l John C. Sheppard, Governor, have by proclamation ,tppointed Th ursdav, the 25th day of November, as the proper 1 time for the public celebration of di vine goolness. We cannot infer from this circumstance that either of the said gentlemen was, or is now a su perintendent of a Sabbath School; or that either of them, at his daily meals "makes a beginning" otherwise than s by reversing his plate. It wns an 1 official aet (one in respect to' the cthristian(rehigion, and custom. The people oD the States are by profession christi ns. The conpact upon which the Union is based recogizes God as tho "giver of every good and perfect 'gift," and the rulers would remind the pccpl'e hthnt Pitey should publicly icnowfge tihe goodness of God, by some special act of worship. A day of thanksgiving, fasting and prayr r was once fashionable, but now the general rule is feasting. Many wor shipping congregations meet in the church to be thankful, and then has ten to their homes, to feast on the thanksgiving turkey and cranberry sauce. But this is a great opportunity for him who believes there is a God who will render unto every man ac corling to his works, whether they be good or evil. This day the an gel will come down and trouble the waers, and it is not who can, but, 'wfiosoeve r will,, let him step in and be made whiole. If you have realized bright earthly hopes and are living to-day in their full enjoyment, he thankful to Him who has made it possible for you to possess a life he yond the grave, which is the eternal fruition of all hope. If you have boon disappointed, he thankful that you may be assured of a life to come in whioh there is no disappointment. If denth has invaded your family, and sorrow has settled down on your home like night, how thankful you should be for the assurance that. there is "one family in heaven and on earth," and that when all the children are gathered into the Father's house not made with hands, thero will be Ito night there, neither anty sorrmv. If your actions and1 your words havec been misconstrued, and friends chn god to foes, how thankful vou shodul be that the- Judge of alH knowethi ev'ery heart, and that he is the "same .yesterday, to-day and forever." Every condition in life calls for 'thanksgiving and praise, hut hmvw few will acknowledge thdeir dependence and gratitude b)y any special act of worship. As you hope to be forgiven, this is the day for vou to forgive cv -eryone against whomtn you have anly thing besides a note or* account-do something to impress the truth of -our Nations religion upon your ninid. You emght to learn how to spend a thanksgiving day with' profit, f.'r the day whose siun has risen uonver to go down behuind the darkened west, is a thanksgiving (ny. Its Sunl ii thle bright and mforning star, of whlich the four and thirty elders said: "Let us he glad and rejoice and give hon or to Him: for the faarriage of the Lamb is comie and his wif.e htathmade herQelf' readv." The Farmners' Convent ioni recomn mended that the Department of Ag riculture be divorced fronm politics, hby putting it entirely uinder the contr'ol of farmers. This wouldl not renmove It one inch fromt polities; for farmers have just as many polities as any -other class. All necessary cfhanges in the laws -of this State can be made by amte ment, anld this wasM a pirudehnt Having -clause in the 10th article of the far mer-s ptlatformi. The only trouble is in getting a majority of any General Assembly 'to agree lupon what is nee. - essary. It niever.seems to occur to itose whto want a new constitution, that they would encounter the sam difficulty in a Constittiunal Clen.I "ention. The recent Convention urges the Leg~ishtture not to squtander thme State's property, by allowinig the wholesale exportation .of phosphlate at merely nominal -prices, -and add that the royality s'heuld be'increased. The higherhetaruiff, the >harder it will ho on -the -consumer. ~The iarmners are in the taajority-,fhey make the rev. alty as high -as they 'please and 'then g,oye the inn of paying it. ~It cold sejed high enough for the pro " to run the Government, and -'4~eve people who do not us * ?mu paying any .tittA.
