Young man, the pleasure of telling a funny joke that is unfit for the ears of your best girl, can hardly pay you for the weakening influence it exercises over our own moral nature. How often have men of talent, and great moral worth, weakened their influence over their intimate friends, by unseemly attempts at such pleasantry. The Edgefield Advertiser of June 17th says: "In Pickens inst week six chilren died in one family, and the father and mothbr are expected to die, from poisoned well water, so the physicians say. It is perhaps not generally known that a well drains from the surface for a.space, the diameter of which, if circular, would be six times its depth. For instr.noe, if the well be thirty feet deep, all the filth one hundred and eighty feet from the curl ing, in every direction, percolates into the well. A great deal of anxiety, pain, suffering and possibly even death itself, may be averted by realizing this fact and acting on it." Notice to TencllerM. Mn. But then I remember that when we were doing nothing or, at play, lie was always at work." And the force of this anlcdloteo is increased by the fact that Richard was always considered, by those who knew him best, to be superior, in natural talent to his brother, yet the one rose to greatness, while the other lived and died in comparative obscu rity.
