We have consulted Appleton's Cy clopedia on the cut worm, which slimy an1d sneaking nuisance is just now at tracting more attention than Imnything else hereabouts. The Appletons al ways e3mploy thme most learned1 and thoroughly informed men to write their articles, and we may fairly con tclea what they say on any par Hicularsbect covers all that is known of it to science or p)ractical experience. We gather from Appleton that the other name of the cut worm is "a (de vastator," which if it be good Latin, is sense enough to be g<xxd English. We are also told tihe history and something of the habits of the moth from the eggs of which "a devasta. tor" is hatched and given a picture of "at devastat r'" himself. But wlhen weO come1 to the remedly Appleton's man knows no more thani anybody else. He says: "The only eil'ectutal prevent ative is' to open the earth daily att the foot of the growing plants and kill the worums, which are easily found. It is said thtat a manure of sea mud1 will protect a gardlen from these wormts; s~oml c'ultivatorsi pr1otect their c'abbatge p)lanits by wrapp~ing a watlnut leaf or paper' coneo firmly atroulnd the root, secured by anl emabtankment o)f earth." At a point six miles west of St. Aug istino, Florida, on the line of the St. fohns Railway, lies a beautiful tract of and which has recently been laid out in a town-site called, West St. Augustine. St Augustine proper is tho oldest City n the United States, and abounds with engend lore, and historical antiquity, and 'ew if any of the many tho sands that isit Florida fail to take a look at the Sea Wall, Old Fort, and the many other in rentiug objects. It was founded Sop :ember 8th, 1565, forty two years provi )uR to the settlement of Jamestown, Va., nd fifty-five years before the landing of he Pilgrims on Plymouth Rock. The mamno St. Augustine was given to the place by the Spaniards, becauso they Ian led upon the day dedicated to that rev 3rocd and learned saint. St. Augustine is growing rapidly, being the terminus of two railways, and others are being extuon led toward it, and itis now known as the Liotel City of Florida. The proprieters and owners of the Il. lustrated Southern World, a sixteen page weekly illustrated paper same size an iarper's Weekly, noting the great prog ress being made in the Anoient City, pur shased a large tract of land near St. Aug istino, from Mr. Win. Astor, of Now rork, imiediately on the line of the St. Johns Railway, which is also owned by 4Ir. Astor, and in the midst of this tract mnd within two hundred feet of the rail oad, have planted in a plot of 700 acres ho city of West St Augustine. From West St. Augustine there exists lirect daily connections for the St. Johns liver, nine miles distant, with steamiboat :ounections going north, and south, dai y. To St.Augustino, six miles distant. ['o Palatka, the (.1em City of the south >y river thirty-five miles, or rail, twenty niles, and Jacksonvillo by river or rail hirty eight miles distant In adhtion to this, the tract on which located the city of West St. Augustine s much higher in altitude than either St. lugustine or Jacksonville, and is rich, Ligh, dry, open pine Ian1. And now comes the strange feature of he whole mai.ter; the proprietors of the llustrated Southern World conceived the lan of giving to each and every yearly ubscriber to the paper, a deed to a lot a the city of West St Augustine, 40 X 00 feet, freo and clear of all incumbran es, and parties becoming owners of thmno ata are not required to build, though it s confidently expected, besause of the .olightful location that many will do so. Florida to day is the Mecca to which housands are looking with longing eyes, ued it is now made poss3ible through the nterpriso of the proprieters and owners f *,he Illustrated Southern World, for all o secure a Houa in that delighi, ful State, 'REE. Many will no doubt wonder how it is ossible for any one to ab1solutely give way lot3 in the city of West St. A ugus me, and yet the reasons, wheu explained ro very simple.'
