This morning at two o'clock as a reporter for The N ewe was on his way home his attention was attracted by groans and peculiar cries proceeding from the doorway of a store in Main street near McBee Avenue. On ap proaching, he found a man pacing up and down on the pavement in an ex cit.d way. his gray, head was bar ed, and in the ligh4 from the street lamp his eyes glittered and flashed with a terrifying gleam. His clotl". ing was disordered and soiled, and in one hand a large open knife was dis tinctly visible while the other clas)ed what looked like a black leather pock et book. The reporter did not like the looks of this apparition and turned toward the guard house in an unostentious and unobtrusive manner and a trot of considerable energy. With a swift and noiseless movement the stranger overtook him, and in a voice of thril ling cadence, made more impressive by the darkness and other circumstan ces, hoarsely said "Halt!" The Newa man netsured the dis tance to the station, mentally calcula ted the chances of the police reaching him in time to bar the coroner of a job, and concluded to do it. The stranger then proceeded in a rapid and incoherent way to give an account of some transaction in which he had participated. As well as could be made out, it seenms that last yea he omitted to obtain a supply of flow er, grass and garden seeds of Sloan Bros., just around the -orner. The result was domestic unhappiness caus ed by a bare lawn and no flowers, starvation at home for want of vege tables and suffering for his stock from lack of proper sowing of grass in his pastures. He had come many miles to guard agnis a similar error this year, was already on the ground awaiting the opening (forgetting that this is Sunday.) His knife was for suicide in case of failure. The pur pose of the pocket book is too obvious for explanation. Mrs. Jeronii,ah-'Looper, we~ regret to lean, has been qui,o sick, but we hope ehe nay aoon be restored to health. Mrs. W. B. F.
