'In the Atlanta di:trict the only place where there was any probability of trouble, every thin, has been settfed by the frank and manly withdrawal of Capt. Harry Jacucon, leaving the field open' for o1on. N. J. Iamnmond, the present ex porieneed and able representative in Congress. '1'Ie eIpublican who runs against him will have more cheek than the average lightning rod agent, and about as much chance of snccess as thr lien Butler electoral ticket will iii Georgia. In this the ntew -tenth district thc HIon. Geo. T. Barnes received the un anitnous nomination, .and the man, bc he lRepublican 01' Independentt, whc takes the field against- him, \vill' havc event a harder time than Judge Twiggs did two years age when he ran againsi lion. Seaborn .teese, the regular Den ocratic nominee. Judge Twiggs is an able nian, a fiue speaker, brimming over with energy and perseverance, popular with the people, and yet he fOtnd so little encouragement that he dceled It expedient to withdraw in the middle of the campaign. A man of less magnetism would have about as much chance as a whirlwind. And yet the RlepublicantS have determined to put forward candidates for Congress in every district in Georgia. As they have very little timber of their own for that purpose, it is presumed that they intend to make victims of aspir lug Inlepei, endents wherever they Can; and t'"ere ue, I1rhaps enoli of those g'entletnon ready and willing to take two bites at the political cherry. In the first place, there is the deltsive lite on election (lay, and in the second,: the more substantial bite before Congress if the 'Republicans shoutld happtlt to get possesslott Of that body. And herein is tihe secret of the determnlnation'to make a fight, in Geot" gia. There is not a) man in the Re publican party who is so bereft of his setnses as to believe that any calidate of that ilk canl have any hope of success in a single Congressional district in this State. Bitt in the contingenev I have mentioned, every seat will bc contested on the ground of fraud and intimidation at the ballot box and judging from the past, every man of them would propably get in. Thc Republicans in Congress. were never known to seek after truth, and it would make no difference how clearly it was shown that there is no interfer once in Georgia with the right of the neg ro to glote. In this district, and this. county es pecially, Maj. Barnes is very populai with the colored people, an'd a great many of them wvill vote for him. Henry Shot for Stealing Provisions. BOSTON, August 13.-A special dis patch from Portsmlouth, N. II., says: Early this morning Col. Kent obtained an interview with Lieut. Greely, who admits that Private Henry had been executed onl the 6th of June. As early as March it was suspected that 11enry was stealing the limited food which was aplportionIed out to the survivors for their sustenance, and this fact being finally and positively ascertained Licnt. Greely Irad thereafter hard work to protect. the man's life. It bc came necessary, in order to keep up the discipline to inform Henry that he would be shot if the practice contin uCd, and that a similar fate would be meted out to anly other member of the party who should be detected inl a like crime. If IIenry had been permitted to continue his stealings unmolested the bIlance of the party would have surely been starved to death and Henry alone survived. After and in spite of these warnings IIenry was again de tected stealing provisions, among the food taken being two pounds of bacon, the eating of so much of which made him sick. 4 search was then institut ed when it was found that henry had among other, thinmrs stolen and secreted a pair of sealskin Loots, which had be. longed to the hunter of the party. Lieut. Gireely was t>herefore forced in order to maintai n military disciline, and to protect the lives ofthis other comradles to issue a writtein order that llenry be shot, which order was carried1 into efl'ect onl Ju ne 6ithI. As to the alleged cannibalism, Lieut. Gr'eely says that itf there -was anything of thle k ind it must have beeni an indi viduial act and not general. Nothing of' the kind, hiowever, caine Under Lient. Greel y's p)ersonal observation. Sergeant Brainard, who is in thy hospital at the niavy yard, conifirms Lieut. G reely's statements. More than a wveek ago Lieut. Greely forwarded to the Secretary of War a detailed re port of lleniry's execution. Upon proper represenatat ions to See retaryv Lincoln a court of inaquiry will undtouibtedly be ordered. More or the AIiegedi Cannibalism. The statemnt that the Greely party fed on thme flesh of their dead comrades has clicited widespread comment. At first it was generally disbelieved, but iS110nw thought to ho quite true. In the case of IIcnry, it seems he was not shot to be eateni, :but aft,er ho was executed for theft as already stated, the, flesh wvas cut from his dead body. It is also clear that the flesh of Lieu tenanit Kilsingbur.y was cateu~ by some, of the, party. Of the bodies of the deadh, live hamve nmot been found, and it is sutspected b)y nmany' that these were likewise -aten-whether the meni were killed for the ptarpose, beltng, of cour'se unknowvn. Lieutenant 'Ureely ex p)resses entire ignorancee of anything like cannibalism, and r,iys It must have happened, itf at all, wenu lie was ill, or so imuch dazedl by the perils surround ing him, that he was ignorant of wvhat took place. The entire amatter will undergo offilcial investlgationi, amid in this way the wvhole truth willl be brought to light. CLEvELAND) WILL STICK.
