Glassy Mountain Methodist church has been abolished by the Methodist authorities. Quite a number of our town people went out to the District Conference at Tabor church on last Sunday. Dr. Jones, the presiding Elder was pres ent and preached on Sunday. When a young man rides horse back to church, he had better be care, ful and not place his saddle in the bug, gy of another young man who ex poets to carry his sweetheart home. He might have his saddle carried off, and be forced to ride back home bare backed, in the event he could not find a friend going his way -in a buggy. The Presbyterian congregation at this place propose to build for them selves a house ot worshiip, and will V_ likely commence work in a short time as the initiatory steps have already been taken. The site decided upon iA on Main street in front of the resi dence of AMrs. Flora Griffin. THE EXUIBITION.-On last Friday night, the igh School at this place, closed its first session by an exhibi tion, at which there was a large, re.. spectable and intelligent audience. The exercises consisted of declama tions by the boys and the reading of the compositions of the girls. The small boys were introduced by Mas.. ter Claud Alpxander, in a very ap'-. 4 propriate manner, and the larger boys were introduced by Mr. Cary, the teacher. The compositions were read by gentlemen selected by each girl for that purpose. To discriminate between any of the declamations of the boys or the compositions of the girls would be a palpable injustice, and we will only say that all acquitted themselves handsomely; in fact,, we will say that we have never seen anything of the kind to snrpass it. The whole affair was alike creditable to teach'er adid' stu'deds, and we con, gratulate the parents of the childraen, and the whole .community, on the successful and efficient .management of the schoolg by i~sWorthay teacher, Mrt. I THI CovT or GNsRrAL Sussrous. ft of Now 0. . udeo.n, '*Wij J*gyp of the aA JuieA l CiWis. , The Grand Jury, In discharge of their du.. ties, beg leave to make the following re port: 1. That we have visited the various publio offmoe and subjected them to a crItical exam ination. These offoes have been well kept, and we And the offioers polite and attentive to the dUties of their various stations, 2. A committee of our body has visited the Poor House and Farm. They report eight paupers-seven white and one colored. The institution Is nearly self-sustaining. We think the reports touching the mlsapplication of the -income of the place, by the Steward are groundless and without foundation. We would recommend that the County Commis. sioners, if after investigation, they And we are correct in our oonolusions, they should continue the Steward for the balance of his term, as the right man in the right place, and encourage him in the performance of his duties. 8. The roads and bridges are, so far as we can ascertain, in reasonably good condition This is creditable to the County Commission era and the people. We would urge them, however. to greater improvement in this re spect. For it is true, as was wisely said by an eminent Judge, "that nothing more clearly indicated the civilization of a country, as the condition of her roads and bridges, and the f cilities she enjoys in getting to market." 4. We rejoice that Pickens, in spite of her financial troubles, is making reasonable pro gress in general improvement in her borders, and in the prosperity of her people. 6. We return our hearty thanks for the at tention and courtesy extended to us by your Honor and the Solicitor. Respectfully submitted, BENTON S. FREEMAN, Foreman. Oh, the flies! the horrible flies!
