Sheriff Mauldin has boon quite sick, but we are glad to learn that he is improving. Rev. S. P. H. Elwoll preached an instructive sormon last Sunday at Union. Rev. 0. L. Durant will deliver a lecture to tho Sabbath School next Sunday morning, alternate J. P. Cary. Call to see B. R. Horton Esq., of Liberty. He will give you a good bargain. The rough places in the streets should be made smooth before summer time, so the pleasure rides will not be miserable. The Professor's Biblo was stolen a few days ago, and he employed a de teotive who soon recovered the lost treasure. - Mr. G. K. Hendricks has a steam engine with which to run a saw mill, cotton gin, &c. Pickons is going to have a graded school, with an officient corps of teachers, that will de'servo the paitron :ago of the wholo country. AR We go to press we learn that Mi.Joel Bradloy, father of lHon. D. F. Mradey (lied at his residence near Easloy Station last Monday evening. Mr's. J. W. Kelley, who lived near Contral, in this C.ounty, died last Saturdaty morning. The friends of Mr. Elbort Br'own ~vill regret to hear of his death, which ocourred at his reidenco near Central, Anst Saturdny. Mr. Van Arnold, died at the resi, donce ot his mother, in Central, on the 22d ult. A great deal of the religion in the dworld is like a life preserver, only p)ut en in a great emergency, and then, very often with the hind side before --Josh Billings. Dr. S. WV. Clayton says his foreigner is casily taught, industrious, and, he thinks, will make a splendid farm hand. The meeting of the colored folks last Sabbath at Mt. Nobo was largely attended. The pistol business has not entirely played out yet; but you do not hear follows boasting about shooting. The wheat and oat crops have been considerably injured by the protracted drought. Only two locusts have sung to the inhabitants of this town; and thce two failing to get anything to wet their whistles, have left for parts un, known. Prof. Gary's school will give an exhibition in the Court House on the evening of the loth instant, beginning about 8 o'clock P. M. All w~ho feel an interest in the education of youth are requested to attend. The ladies themselves will sell ice 4day at the now store on Main Street. Hogs are dying up in Pumpk intown Township. It is not known whether it is caused from the cholera or from having eaten too many locusts. Pickens is a plcasant summer re sort, and boforo very long it will be perfootly delightful.
