W. .arle and Bun Branch colored, which resulted in the painful' t0h gb not necessarily fatal, shooting of iancb and another colbred man by the name of George Cannon. The 9 origin of the difficulty, as we get it J from Dr. Earle himself, is as follows: Branch approached a Democratic no gro standing in front of Dr. Earle's store and commenced abusing him i for wearing a red shirt. Dr. Earle told the negro to desist frotr. his abuse of the Democratic negro and go off from the front of his store. Branch replied to Dr. Earle that it was none of his business, and that he could whip four men like him. This. Dr. Earle says caused him to "fly into a passion"9 C and he struck the negro with his fist; the negro struck back and they en gaged in fisticuffs, the Doetor not hav ing a pistol or even a pocket knife about him. Mr. James W. Earle, < brother of the Doctor, who did the shooting, was standing by and says the negro, Branch, had a knife in his hand and was striking with it at I his brother- To prevent the negro from cutting his brother down and to save his life, he drew his pistol and fired at Branch twice, the first shot taking effect in the right arm near the point of the shoulder. The second shot Missed Branch, but struck George Cannon, (who was standing in front of the Court House 150 or 20u yards off,) in the calf of the leg. We did not in terview Mr. James W. Earle ourself, but obtained the above facts stated about him from a gentleman who had a conversation with him after the difficulty was over. We saw Branch after the ditficulty and he appeared to be considerably under the influence of whiskey. The ball, he said, did not pass out but had lodged somewhere, he supposed, in the shoulder. We asked him how the difficulty origi nated and the only information we ob tained from him was that he "was not bothering Dr. Earle," and that he "could get up then and whip him it he was shot." Dr. Earle probed the wound of Cannon and found that the ball had ranged up towards the knee joint, but could not find it. From its course it evidently struck the ground and ricocheted before it hit his leg. Some of th negroes who ai peared to be undert the influence of' whaiskey sioeeme to be very much excited over the affair and gave a widely differecnt verson of it ftrm that above stated. Tho atfair is to be dceply regretted, but as it, w ill evidently undergo a thlorouigh jutd icial in vestigation we for bear fu rther comm neunt.
