On Saturday b? ht,,abo,ut nine o'clock, just as the Slvriff had returned from up stairs, wie,e lhe had been locking up and securing his prisoners for the night, some one knceked at the front door. Tliinikinig it somne -friend or neighbor, lie unhesitatingly opneed the door, when t.hree or four men rushed in with as many guns, which were pro sented at the Sheriff's breast, and ho -was asked, in very polite t.ones, to do livetuLp the jail keys. The Sheriff attenipted to remonstrate, when he was suddenly cut shor't and a per'em tory demand made for them; the de miand rendered more forcible by a pretty free use of'ndjectives arid other parts of speech not found in the gram. me r. By this time the hall-way was pretty; well crowded with men, and others could be heard in the yard. Thbe Sheriff yielded and delivered up the keys, when the guns were at once withdrawn from his breast. They then proceed up stalirs, followed by the Sheriff, who requsted of' them not to let out any btut those they had come for. There were several other ftisoners:confinted at the timnee,har.ed with vat ious crimecs-soine for a vie. lat.ion of the revenue, -and some with murder. The men, however, relea,od ogly the three above named. As soon -as they wero out they mounted their horses and rode oft rapidlIy towards the mountains. The whole time occu * pied was not; more thtan ten or fifteen minutes. The men were entire strang-~ er's to the Sheriff.
