"Chamberlain's anto-room and hall are still full of soldiers. Negroes still guard the doors. DEPUTIES.-In tho absence of com. missions from Govornor Hampton, our newly elected Clerk of Court and Sheriff have taken charge of their of fices in the capacity of deputies. When their commissions arrives the offices will be formally turned over to them by the present incumbonts. The exercises of the Pickens High School will bo resumed Monday, Feb. uary 5th. This institution affords an excellent opportunity for both sexes to get a thorough preparatory or busi. ness education. The Principal, is an educator of long and varied experi enco in his profossion-few more so. That sleigh which recently disap peared so mysteriously, was discov ered, on last Saturday, in the Court Room, rigged off and fitted out for an Arctic Expedition. How, or by what agencies it got thoro is not known, but the wholo matter is being inves tigated before a Referee. who, we trust, will bring out all ti facts and report them soon to th( proper nu, thorities. A GooD ArrOINTMENT.-Govornor Hampton has appointed W. T. Bowen Jury Commissioner of this County. Mr. Bowen has accepted. Jackson Arter, an old colored man, died at his home, near this place on last Tuiesday morning. lie had been free all his life, and by industry had accumulated a tollerably fair property. SirooTiNo AFFRAY.-E. H. Barton, W. F. Gary, Van B. Hendricks, John Jamison and Charley White, on last Thursday night or Friday morning, arrested a man by the name of Red, mond, from North Carolina, and cap, $uied his wagon and team and about 25 gallens of v;hiskey. Redmond, we are informed, is the man who killed Duckworth, a Revenue official, in Transylvan in Coun ty, North Carolina, last fall, and thero is said to be $500 reward for him in that State. Rod.. mond and another man who was with him, were sleeping in an unoccupied house, in the lower section of this County, near Mr. Fowvler's, when Bar ton and company came upon them. They rushed in, coverod themn with their dou blosbarreled shot-gu ns, made them surrender and tied thorn. Bar ton, we aro informed, struck and kick ed Rledmond1, after ho wvas tied which made him very angry. This not:on on the part of Barton, it is thought by some, was the prime causo of the ter, riblo vengenco, Redmond subsequent, )y wreaked upon his captors. Watch. ing his opportunity, he gave a leap into the woods, and disappeared quick. ly in the darkness of the night. Man-, aging to untie himself and procuring weapons, he soon returned and fired into the pairty, wounding Barton and Hendricks. Barton was wounded in the right arm and thigh with buck shot, painfully, but not dangerously. Mur., Hendricks was shot in the hip, thigh and kneo with buckshot also, And4 jro lies in a precarious condition, though his friends have hopes of his rdbovery. Recdmond, after lurking around in the noighborhood a day or two, returned it is thought to his re treats in the mountains of North Car., olina.
