Boggs and the Hornets. Old man Boggs wished to make Some slight repairs on the top of his neidence, and for the purpose hjud oc casion to tear up a few shingles. In doing so in a quiet arid intffonsive manner, he was astonished to find that he bi,d dituirbod a horn t's meet.. Tke hornoto swarme-i upon Mr. Roggs. They made it hot for him at the very first onset. le rushed to tho ladder, attached from behind, when, horror ofl herrors I a neighbor had. boriowed' hih ladder! Mr. Boggs eavortedl, he tumbled, he rolled fion one end of the r of to the othei' screaming as he went, 'ladder, ladder The hornets continually increased, they flew at his nose, his ears, his cheeks; they danced on his torelieud; they crawled down his back; they filw up his broeches legs, they met half way and fought each other, they stung here, thero and everywhere. Boggs' wild gesticulations and terrific shouts attracted the attention f the whole neighborhood. His friends mit. took the shouts of "ladder!" "hornets!" for "Tilden and IHendricks," and thought he was ratifying, but so much seriousness was depicted on his faco that a ladder was finally procured and i rescue effected. Mr. Bogugs is laid up for repairs now, and his taco looks like the iewspaper pictures of a do, tented prizo tighter. ADvIcE TO GinLs.-An exennge says: "Why will girls run away to get married?" We give it up, says the Louisvillo Courier Journal, but we know a lot hero that, would be glad enough to stay at home, or jump at the chance to walk off anld get mar ried. The boys ain't around asking them as they did; takes more money to run ono nowadays than it does to run a steamboat, and tbey can see more fin' with a steamboat. Ah ! gii.s, its your own fault. Swap off your silks and satins for lawns and calicoes; shut up the piano and dive into a washtub; throw away your fancy needle work and tackle a red Lot stove in the kitchen. Instead of receiving Brown, the bankor's son, in the parlor, keep your eyes skinnou for Bill Burns, the blacksmiti's son, as 1he goes from his work; kiss his dirty f'ae thiough a broken pano of' glass in the kitchen window, and after a w1ile, when lho learns his trade and you know your business, get married, go to honsekooping~ by yourselves, help each other, live lihppy, raise a family that will be an honor to your names and credit to themselves, die happy, and the angels will niot turn their backs upon you uip thero. WVINmT VIEw oF' TREEs.-Fe wA peop)le think, at the Lime of planting trees in sprong and fall, how they will look ini wiln ter. T here are somesp. cies of trees that r.ppear very beauti ful when clothed ini their foliage, but when t his is gone they look stiff, ill.. shaped, anid anty thing but graceful. WVo should r'eme'mber that tr'ees are to be seeni ini winter as wvell as summeitr, and their appearance at, both seasonis shul d be taken in to consideration at, the time of select, ing the varieties for planting. Ini our Northern States it is often far mifore pleasant winiters to have our dwellings exposed to sun shine than shadow; con sequent.ly large evergreens should riot be placed so near11 as to make our homes look gloomy. .Deciduous trees are far pr1eferalblo to evergreen neari the houseO, for at the t i shadle is wvan ted they give it, and in winter naked stems but slight y obstruct the rays which bestow both light aind heat upon01 our dwellings.
