SHERIFF KILLS LIQUOR MAKER. .Fatal Meeting in Hie Etlisto Swamp near an Illicit Still. " Wnlterboro, S. C., July 12.-John Britton, a son of Chlof of Police Britton, of Branchville, was killed by Sheriff Ackerman at noon to-day while resisting arrest. Britton was said to ho opeiating a still in the Edlsto river swamp. When Sheriff Ackorman attomptod to placo him undor arrest Britton shot at tho sheriff and his deputies, G. C. Bon ton and* J. B. Ackorman. Fortunate ly, they wore near onough to take shelter behind trees and returned , the fire. Several shots had hoon exchanged when Bi'lt'on, in an unguarded mo ment, exposed himself and was shot in the side hy Shorlff Ackerman, who intended to shoot only to force him to give up; but one shot wont high enough to strike a vital organ, and death resulted in an hour. The body was brought to Walterboro, and Magistrate Pelham held an in quost, tho verdict of the jury being In accordance with tho foregoing. Britton and Talmadge Edwards wore together at a 40-gallon copper still and eight 60-gallon barrels of mash. Their alleged violation of tho law was reported to tho sheriff and ho was armed with a warraift. Ed wards denies complicity, stating that he was only a visitor to Britton. Sheriff Ackerman has reported the killing to Governor Harvey. NORMAN DRUG CO., Walhalla, S. C. SMALL PROSPECT FOR TOLBERT. Appearances Are Giat Committee Not to Report Favorably. Washington, July 13.-it looks very much as If tho nomination of Jos. Tolbert, Republican ..atlonal committeeman for South Carolina, for United States marshal for tho Western district of South Carolina, ls never going to get through. This ls the impression gained after talks had with many of tho Senators who are members of tho Judiciary com mittee, both Democrats and Repub licans, the appearance being that the commi'.teo will not report tho nomi nation favorably. Senator Shortridge, Republican, of California, chairman of tho sub-committee, to which tho Tolbert nomination was referred for investigation after there had been numerous charges filed, and tho a'.tentlon of tho committee called to tho matter by Senators Dial and Smith, has not yet called tho sub committee together, nor does ho In dicate that he will, jn view of the affairs in tho tariff bill that is pend ing. Even if tho snh-commlttee mot, thoro ls no telling when tho full com mittee will take up tho matter. When tho sub-comm'.ttoe meets it will have boforo lt tba prplests from South Carolina against tho conflrmatioh of Tolbert sent to Senators Dial and Smith, these having been placed In tho hands of Sonator Ashurst, of Arizona, tho Democratic member of tho sub-committee. It is possible that thoro may ho witnesses called beforo the suh-commltteo, and that the fight against Tolbort's confirma tion will bo vigorously pressed. PROTESTS MADE AGAINST CLOSE Of tho Navy Yard at Charleston by Representative Men of City., Washington, July 14,-A protest against the Navy Department's pro posed abandonment of tho Charles ton, S. C., navy yard was mado to President Harding yesterday by Son ator Smith and Representative Lo gan, of South Carolina, and Mayor John P. Grace, of Charleston. As tho throo left tho Whilo House after a half hour audlonco with tho Presi dent, they reported that their inter views had been "very satisfactory," and declared that thoy wore hopeful that tho navy yard- would be kept in operation. lt was pointed out to tho Presi dent that tho closing down of tho Charleston yard would leavo tho two thousand three hundrod milos of Ncoast lino botweon Capo Hatteras and tho Mexican border without a single yard oqulppod , for navy craft and, larger morchant ships. It is reported that both South Caro lina and Georgia highway departments have funds available for matching fed eral funds to erect a bridge across the Togalo river at tho stato linc.
