Walhalla-Phone 34-Westminster MISTRIAL FOR PATTY ARBUCKLE Snid that Eleven Members of Jury Favored (?iving ulm Freedom. A dispatch from San Francisco, of date Dec. 4, which wo were unable to publish last week, contained tho following information regarding tho trial of Roscoe ("Fatty") Arbuckle, the film star comedian, who waa on trial on tho charge of manslaughter: Mistrial in Arbuckle Case. After forty-one hours of delibera- ? tion the jury, composed of seven mon and five women, which tried Roscoe j Arbuckle on a charge of manslaugh ter in connection with tho death of Virginia Rappe, was discharged when 1 lt was unable to agree upon a ver- J diet. The jury was brought Into court at its own request at noon, reported a disagreement and askod that lt be discharged. There wore two Jurors who voted for conviction, according to August Fiitze, foreman of the jury. District Attorney Brady said that Arbuckle had boen given a fair trial, and ho complimented tho Jurors who j held out for conviction as having "courage and conviction." He was not in court when tho jury reported. "1 had hoped the jury would reach an agreement," ho said. "I confident ly expected a verdict of guilty upon the evidence presented. In my opin ion, the disagreement does not vin dicate Roscoe Arbuckle. A vindica tion would come after a quick, unan imous verdict. It was my duty to present tho facts to tho Jury. This 1 have done, though opposed by great wealth, power and Influence," Tho members of tho Jury looked haggard and worn when they filed into the little court room, over which a deep hush had settled, and took their seats. The foreman Informed tho court that "lt ls physically and morally Impossible for us to roach a verdict." At tho request of the court he announced tho final ballot divi sion. Arbuckle Makes Statement. "While this, through tho techni calities of the law, ls not a legal ac quittal, morally lt is such," Arbuckle said, in discussing tho jury's inabil ity to agroo. "The undisputed ?(nd uncontrn dictod testimony established that my only connection with tho sad affair was ono of merciful sorvlco, and the fact that ordinary human kindness should have brought upon mo this tragedy has seemed a cruel wroi,?," his statement continued. "I have sought to bring Joy and gladness and merriment into the world, and why thia great misfor tune should have fallen upon me 's a mystery that only God can, and will, some day reveal." After stating that he rested his cause in "divine Justice and tho con fidence of the fairness of tho Ameri can people," 'Arbuckle concluded his statement with tho declaration that "no act of mine ever has, and I pro mise that no act of mine ever shall, cause them to regret their faith in mo." Arbucklo's defense was that ho was assisting Miss Rappe through a period of illness, caused, according to the defense contentions, by an in ternal disorder, at the tim? he is al leged by tho prosecution to have in jured her. Tho prosecution held that tho injury resulted from an attempt by Arbuckle to attack the actress. CALOMBA USERS TAKE AWFUL RISK. Very Next Dose of Treacherous Drug May Start Terrible Salivation. By REV. LEW W. GOSNELL A nina tant Dean, Moody Bibi? Institute, Chicago, TEXT.-But of that day ur.u hour know* oth no .man, no, not the annuls which aro In heaven, neither tho bon but the Fa ther.-Mark 13:32. Our fathers would have been aiunzed to hour uny Christian leader rejected in tuc light of Increasing knowledge. It ls asserted that even lu tho sprltual realm, our Lord was not m infallible teacher. Ills assertions iis to Old Testament history and au thorship are rejected by many, and moro recently Ills teaching as to the future, ^specially the matter of His return, liss been discorded. Our text ls adduced In support of this attitude, and lt behooves us to con sider these words of Christ's careful ly. lt ls not to be disputed that Christ here disclaimed knowledge as to the day and hour of Ills coming. True, all the resources of His divine nature were open to His mind, but for cer tain mysterious purposes, Ile was con tent to be Ignorant of this one thing In the days of Ills humiliation. This admission of Christ, however, does not Justify Uie Inference drawn from lt that He ls not n reliable teacher. First of all, this very confession of ignorance on one point contains an implicit claim of supernatural knowl edge. A mere man would not need to Inform us that ho did not know the day or hour of the Lord's coming; we would take that for granted. The fact that Christ must so Inform us, sug gests at once that He was above man. Again, notice the explicit claim Christ makes for Himself. Prof. James Stalker puts it tims : "Four planes of being and of tue knowledge are specified-that of man, that of angels, that of Himself, and that of God. Evidently the Son was above, not only man, but angels, and If lt ls confessed that He ls ignorunt of any thing, this is mentioned as a matter of surprise." An Amazing Assertion. .. Moreover, what more man ls compe tent to tell us anything about the knowledge or ignorunce of the augels? But the Son of Mun calmly announces that of that day and hour no angel knows. Verily, this passage In which Christ confesses ignorance assures us, at the same time, of Immen curable In sight on His part. Finally, on this point of which He confesses His Ignorance, Christ never assayed to teach. He bids us watch, because wo know not tho day nor the hour, and Informs the disciples that the Father hath kept the times and seasons within own power. This very resorve begets in us a confidence that wo may rely Implicitly on any positive teaching Jesus gives about things present, things past, or things to come. It has been aptly said: "Christ knew whae He knew, and never made positive affirmations un less He was sure of the correctness of what Ho said." How amazing it ls that any man will charge our Lord with ignorance on any point upon which He claims knowledge 1 Let no child of God be disturbed by learned talk as to the Ignorance of our Lord. True, when He came Into the world, He emptied Himself (Phil. 2:7 R. V.). But <he fact that as tho words imply, the emptying was volun tary, assures us that He was not so emptied ns to be no longer able to teach us whom He came to teach and to save. It has been well said that a man who should go to Africa to teach the natives, hut who would con fess he was not competent to give In struction, would cense to be regarded as a benefactor and would appear, rather, as an Impostor. But our Lord Is the Truth. One Having Authority. In all His positive teaching, Christ speaks as one having authority, and not as the scribes of the earth. Ho confidently lifted tho veil from the un seen world, In the parable of Lazarus, calmly announced to the Sndducees tho conditions which will obtain In the resurrection. Think of such a declara tion as Ile makes In Matthew 11:27: "All things are delivered unto me of my Father; and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth nny man tho Father, save the Son, ?nd he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him." It will sulllce, In closing, to give lils own assurance as to His 'caching. In John 12:40, f>0, He says: "For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, He gave me a com mandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that Ills commandment ls life everlasting; whatsoever I speak, therefore, even ns the Father said unto me, so I i speak." And nt tho very closo of nis ministry, in His hlgh-prlcstly prnyor, He declares to tho Father, concerning Ills disciples, "I hnvo given unto them the words which Thou gavest me." -John 17:8. rulse a question as to our Lord's t rust worthiness ns a teacher.
