Boll Weevil at Work ill Oconee.. Thc genuino boll weevil has been found at work In cotton in Oconee, and C. W. Patterson has the distinc tion ot' having first found it and call ed attention of Hie County Agent to the presence of the pest this year. As many as live punctured forms were found on a single young cotton stock, and over two bottles full of the punctured forms were gathered by Mr. Patterson and the agent. No adult weevils were found. The adults are sometimes difficult to locate when they are few In number. Mr. -Patter son states that bis neighbors have also found tho punctured forms with little white grubs in some of them. Mr. Patterson states that be found them in bis ilelds last August and also in August, 1919, although the State entomologist's records of the weevil's advance show that the wee li invaded this county for the llrst time, and In limited numbers, last year in August and September. Tho Anderson Mail was in error whoa, one doy last week, it quoted the Oco noe ; gent as saying that the weevil had not yet reached Oconee. The real weeli was found near Soneou last September by the Federal en tomologist, who at that time failed to lind thc weevil around Walhalla while searching ,.wit1i tho county agent. Boll weevils were sent in from near Walhalla about throe weeks later by Mr. Cox, agricultural teacher. The presence of the pest at Earle's Grove ls the first brought to the attention of the county agent this year. The best way to look for the pest Is to watch the young squares. When you notice that some squares have flared out the bracts, and some fallen to the ground, and some of them turning dark, each having a slight raised point or pimplo on the side of the square where the female weevil sealed the egg puncture, then you are finding the work of the weevil. Open the dark punctured forms where the punctured square lias had time to start to decay-about five to eight days from the egg puncture-and you will find the young white grub, curled up in the form, rather quiet. The grub remains In the square, causing its decay, and changing Into a pupae or resting state, and from this state changing into the adult weevil--all In about two weeks. The female can lay hundreds of eggs per day. Put tho punctured forms in a bottle, allow some air and keep moist and watch the weevils change from tho egg into the weevil. The county agent's first experience with tho wee vil was In August. 1919, when the weevil first came into Bamberg coun ty tn numbers, at which time he was serving as county agent there. If one could predict the weather for the next six or eight weeks, moro could be foretold about possible wee vil damage, hut it is not likely that there will be serious general damage over the county this year, although there may be damage in spots. Should there he a mild winter this year, moro general damage, and rather se vero damage in spots .can be pre dicted for 1922. Mound Trees for Borer. Right now is the timo to mound tho peach trees against the peach tree boror. The first part of July is tho only timo for this work. With a hoo pull the dirt up around the trunk of the tree to a height of.about 8 or 10 inches. It ls better to put on a trunk wash before mounding, al though not absolutely necessary. Cse for making 25 gallons of wash) 20 pounds of quick lime, three pounds of whnlo oil soap, 4 pounds sulfur. Dissolve the soap In three gallons of hot water. Make a thin paste of the sulfur und add to the soap solu tion. While lime is being slaked in barrel, .pour the mixture over it and gradually dilute to 26 gallons. Apply while warm. The new remedy, para-dlchloro benzene, is applied at tho base of tho trees in October. Geo. R. Briggs, County Agent.
