Columbia, May 14.-The trial of Corpl. Matson, charged with the mur der of Wm. S. Chaplain, prominent Columbian, on the night of January 19th, was halted at the camp yes terday when Lieut. T. B. Fowler, one of tho four soldiers charged with murder, refused to testify against the corporal. The corporal states that ho will not testify when Lieut. Fowler is tried, and Fowler refuses lo testify against tho corporal. The matter is to bo referred to tho South eastern Departmont at Charleston for a. ruling as to whether the Mat son trial shall proceed without Fow ler's testimony. Tho J idge advocate states that he will not consent to Fowler's trial until the Matson case is ended.
