Editor Keoweo Courier: Just a few brief items from the .shipbuilding town. Tho year 19 20 seems to bo a brilliant year for ship launching, and I will venturo to say this will be tho banner year for American shipbuilding Indue try, We have hutched throe huge oil tankers, five torpedo boat destroyers and the largest of all tho ba+'lostiips, tho Maryland. The government oil tanker, build ing here for the Navy Departmen, was launched without a single hitch at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. on April 21, at 10.30 a. m. She was just 4 2 seconds clear ing the ship ways. Another one of the some type and the same dimen sions will be built on the same ship ways. The launching was delayed a few minutes on account of a heavy downpour of rain. She had as her maids of honor little Misses Esther Graham and Mary Ann Mallison, tho latter a daughtor of Commander Mallison and Mrs. Mallison. Tho sponsor broke a bottle of champagne on her bow just as she began leaving the ship ways. The launching of the Sepulga was a private affair, only a few ship yard officials and about 1,200 ship yard workers being present. The Sepulga will carry a oargo of 360,000 gallons of oil for fuel purposes. Her dimen sions are 463 feet 3 inches long. She has a beam of GO feet. She must make i o vi knots an hour on her! trial trip, and her deadweight capacity is 11,375 tons. The Sepul ga is tho first boat to be completed on tho way? bofore she hits tho water. Three more oil tankers are on the ways-the Selina, the Tippe canoe and the Trinity. The Selina will be launched May 8th. We aro having beautiful spring weuther hero now. So the fad spread from neighborhood to neighborhood, and now even the fastidious mani curists and typists are clattering down to their establishments with the clogs on their feet.
