The United States battleship South carolina, In company with live other battleships of tlie Atlantic fleet, will make a cruise to the Pacific this coming summer. Tlie other vessels of tho squadron will be the U. S. S, Connecticut, U. S. S. Michigan, U. S. S. Minnesota, U. S. S. Kansas, U. S. S. New Hamp shire. This squadron will bo known as tho "Midshipman's Practice Squadron," and will take tho mid shipmen nt tho Naval Academy on their annual summer cruise. The fol lowing ports will bo visited: Ciuan tanamo, Cuba; Panama Canal Zone; Hawaiian Islands; Puget Sound, in the Slate of Washington; San Pedro, Cal.5 San Francisco, Cal., and San Diego, in Ibo same Slato. This squadron will assemblo at Philadelphia about May 10th. After a short stay in Philadelphia it will go to Annapolis, Md., for about two weeks to take part in tho gradua tion exorcises of tho midshipmen at tho Putted States Naval Academy. Ohio, April 15. Harry Miller, aged 21?. of Akron,was held In the .Jefferson county Jail boro to-day after having publicly con fessed lo the murdor of I l-yoar-old Frances South, during a revival sor Vico Inst night nt a littlo church at Peach Bottom, VV. Va., noar hore. Miller went to the church altar and, with hands raised, ho prayed to Cod to have mercy on his soul for the death of tho little girl. He said thal ho found relief in telling all to (?od. Members of the congregation took Miller to Sheriff J, lt. Ditton, of Brooks county, W. Va., who believes the man to bo slightly demented. Sheriff Pilton said t mt during the night Miller insisted upon making a full confession to him. He said thal Miller confessed to boating tho littlo South girl over the head with a re volver at a lonely spot near the girl's home at Adens, Ohio. Ho told tho sheriff ho killed tho girl because of something she had said while ho was keeping company with her sister. Miller will ho questioned to-day hy Prosecutor Hoy Carpenter and pro bably will bo taken to tho scone of tho crime for identification purposos. C., April 15.-Represen tatives of tho Plnkorton National De tective Agency and other well-known sleuths have boen called by Hamilton Carhartt, millionaire overall manu facturer of Detroit, Mich., to try to recover jewelry valued at probably $100,000, alleged to have boen stolen from tho Carhartt place on Catawba rivor several weoks ago. Up to dato three persons aro under arrest on suspicion of being implicated in the robbery. They aro Rosa Williamson and Marshall and Sam Cottys. The Pinkertons and other detec tives employed hy Mr. Carhartt and hy tho insuranco company which is said to have carried insurance in tho amount of $46,000, covering the Carhartt jewelry, aro making an in vestigation from every anglo. The first, estimate was that the value of tho stolen jewelry was about $27, 000, hut investigation lins developed that articles stolen cost tho owner at least $36,000 when they were pur chased years ago. Durham, who last, night was named as Clerk of the United States Court for tho Western District of South Carolina, will assume his du ties on the 1st of July or shortly thereafter, it was stated Wednesday morning by Judge H. H. Watkins, who made the appointment. The appointment of Mr. Durham was made by Judge Watkins and oc casioned some surprise, Judging from comments on the streets. There were many formal applicants for the position, but information from a Washington source had stated that Wyatt Alkon, former Congressman from tho Third District, would be named to succeed Mr. Knight. This rumor was put to an ond Wednes day night when Judgo Watkins an nounced that Mr. Durham had been named to fill tho vacancy caused by Mr. Knight's resignation.
