In conversation the other day with .several ladles, tho oditor of Tho Cou rier asked why it is that our women seem so lieut on purchasing articles of wearing apparel that In many cases it is apparent'are hoyond tho means of the wearers of the afore said articles. One lady advanced thc idea that tho women dross as they do-"re gardless of expense," wo might say --because they desire to attract, the attention of tho male population. This idea was promptly tabooed hy another lady, who advanced the idea that tho whole fault lies in the feminine desire lo excel. "Why. .said this lady, "it's nothing in the world but that each woman is try ing to outstrip the other." Wo thought it advisable not to pursue the subject further. And yet wouldn't a practical demonstration of Ihis theory heat clothing costs to a frazzle In short, order? Bach woman trying to "outstrip" the other. (Josh all hemlock! you can't heat that combination! This, we hello ve, would prove the most effective weapon against the high cost of women's clothing. And so very interesting! MISSIOI) BY CENSUS MAN. Last week ono of our subscribers called attention to the fact that sev eral families in his immediate com munity had been overlooked hy the census enumerator, and Mr. Aull, the census supervisor for this district, who ls watchful on his joh and ear nestly desirous that tho census fig ures in this district shall be as ac curate and complete as possible, no ticed the complaint at once. He re quests us to urge all who have com plaints of this kind to communicate with him as oarly as possible, giv ing detailed information that, will enable him to correct, if possible, any errors or shortcomings of tho enumerators wlio worked under his direction. Mr. Aull says: "Please ho kind enough to toll your subscriber for mo that if he will send you the names of the families w'>< have not been counted I will be on.y too glad to havothe names add ed to tho list and give that district credit for then. "1 am going over to Easley next ?week to chock up some work in that town, and will como on to Walhalla while In that section, and will be vory glad to ho advised of any fami lies in Oconeo who have boen over looked and wore not counted. I feel that the enumerators did their work faithfully, but you know it would have been almost humanly impossi ble not to have omitted somo fami lies. But there cortainly should not bo instances whero whole communi ties were overlooked." So hero ls tho chance to got cor rections of errors, or tho addition of names to the list where overlooked by tho enumerators. If there are those who have such instances In their knowledge, it will bo well to make the correction. The Courier Will take lt upon itself to handle all mich matters if tho information ls forwarded to us. Wo will promptly get the information into the hands of Supervisor Aull, and wo know that he will do all in his power to add nil aulhentlo information to the con tais data for our district. Il lilli COST OK cumiiNo. Just at this time there is discus sion on all sides on tho question of ?he high cost of clothing, Overall Clubs are being organized In almost every town and city, the members pledging themselves lo wear overalls nnd abandon the use of over-priced Clothing until tho price ol' suits shall have boen reduced to u reasonable Uguie. In not a few places the wo men have gone into tho work of giv lng voice to practical protest against Inordinately high prices of clothing, nnd they are pledging themselves to wear dresses this summer made of materials of moderato prices. Both these are good modes thal will cer tainly have decided effect upon high prices if they are adhered to with uniformity, or even to any great ex tent. Our country is suffering to-day hy reason of two disastrous national misfortunes- - under-production and over-consumption. .Tho remedy lies in tho hands of the American people. Tho conscientious adherence to the ?logan "Everybody at work, Econ omy for all." would chango condi tions probably quicker, and cortain ly more substantially, than all tho legislation and donating in high places that may bo brought to boar on tho situation. How about tho overall club propo rtion for Walhalla and surrounding ?country? How about our girls and women taking up the moderately prlcod matorlnls for dresses, and ?the wearing of simple garments un til such timo ns thorn shall he a re turn to reason on tho part of labor and capital, tho two great forces that aro now ut dagger's points, with the public as a buffer between thom, re ceiving tho wild thrusts that aro mado by tho warring factions? We may not accomplish by abstinence from tho uso of ovor-prlced articles all at which wo aim, but wo certain ly can at least aid in tho work of teaching by example tho groat and bonollclal lesson of economy-a les son than which thoro Is none moro sorely neodod in our country to-day? Tho Courier favors tho overall club Idea for mon and tho dross re form Idea for the women. Both can bo made vory offectlvo weapons with which to light high costs. .{??*.. j.. The levy will bo addod to the taxes next year, and by reason of this increase in funds for current support of tho schools, the trustees will bo enabled to pay the teachers salaries more in keeping with the services rendered. While this will be tho caso, wo do not be lieve that our teachers will receive anything like what they ought'to have. As a matter of fact, those who are laboring to train and teach the children of the district to make the future citizens of our town and com munity, receive for their services about one-half the wage paid to the average unskilled negro laborer, who can neither read nor write.
