Governor Cooper spoke on "Citi zenship and the Kingdom," making an excellent address. The last, day of tho convention was devoted entirely to tho Baptist $Vo 000.000 campaign and such business as is attendant to adjournment. Standing Committees. Armistice day was observed by the Walhalla High School. It was planned to have tho High School march down Main street at 10 a. m., hut this had to bo dispensed with on account of rain. At 10.30 a. m. tho school assembled in the audi torium. After singing "America" Superintendent Dukes introduced the following speakers: Col. R. T. Jaynes, .Ins. M. Moss and Hov. W. H. I lani i lt on, all of whom made short, pointed addresses. Two pa triotic solids wore sung, and at tho conclusion', Superintlent Dukes an nounced that the children would have a holiday for Hie balance of tho day. Toward the hour of dusk a num ber of young folks began a cele bration of tho day with the firing of ??uns and ringing of bells. While this celebration took on nothing of tho noise and hilarity of the cele bration a year ago, still thoro was quito enough to "Jog tho memory" of those who might have overlooked the first anniversary of tho signing of the arniistico and bring the signi ficance of the day to mind. Heard in Supremo Court-Decision Is Favorable to Hyde. Columbia, Nov. ll.-Holding that tho action of the Charleston City Democratic Executive Committee, in the manner in which it declared John P. Grace tho Democratic nomi nee for Mayor of Charleston on August 32, was J Ilegal and preju dicial to tho Incumbent, Major T. T. Hyde, the State Supremo Court, in a majority opinion handed down this morning shortly after ll o'clock, set aside tho nomination. Nominee Not Determined. "From what has boen said," the majority opinion sums up In its con clusion, "it is clear that we cannot determine from the record hoforo us which of tho candidates for mayor received the majority of tho votes that were and ought to have been counted. We cannot, therefore, sus tain the contention of thc petitioner that the court will consider the votes and declare the election. Nor can wo sustain the contention that, in the absence of a declaration of the executive committee, the count of tho managers should bo sustained as a declaration of the results. Under the statutes and rules the managers were not authorized to declare the result. That was for tho executive (.ommittee and lt has not done so acoording to law. It follows that all we can do is'to hold that the result of the election has not been legally ascertained and declared, and that the actions of the executive committee in attempting to do so were effected by errors of law, pre judicial to the petitioner, Hyde, and must be set aside, and it is so ad judged." Tho majority opinion was written by Associate Justice D. E. Hydrick and was concurred in by Chief Jus tice Eugene B. Gary and Associate Justice T. B. Fraser. A dissenting opinion, written by Associate Jus tice Richard C. Watts, was concurred in hy Associate Justice 1 George W. uage. Justice Watts dissented on the grounds that tho Charleston election case was political and not judicial, and for that reason, was without the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. "As nothing is involved In this but political rights, I am opposed to the court interferring in any form," he said. Other Petitions Thrown Out. Tho majority opinion dismissed the petition of VV. P. Sellers and Thomas B, McCarthy, Hyde candi dates for Aldermen, because, said the opinion in substance, the face of the returns showed clearly that John P. Michel and F. H. Bold, their Grace factional opponents, had been nominated by such majorities that they would not be overturned even If the contested and disputed 91 votes before tho executive commit tee had been counted for Sellers and McCarthy. TJhe petition of John I. Boykln and some 40 other Hyde voters challenged by Grace support ers, was dismissed. The election for the nomination of .Mayor and 2 1 Aldermen for the city of Charleston, as shown by the ma jority opinion, held on August 19, resulted on tito face of returns in a majority of ono voie fo * the in cumbent, Mayor T. T. Hyde, tho re sult being that Hyde received 3,4 21 votes and Grace 3,4 20 votes. In ad dition there wore 77 chnllonged votes from the city nt large and 14 "mu tilated ballots" from ward 12 which were not counted, but wit ich wore segregated and left to tho de cision of tho oxocutlvo committee. -_ ?-... From out of the waste and deso lutlon left by the tropical hurricane at Corpus Christi, Tex., and the sur rounding territory there has come to the headquarters of tho Baptist 75 million campaign the news that the Corpus Christi Baptist Association has assumed its quota of $110,000 in the live-year progruui. Rev. Hu lou Ri Carroll, moderator of the associa tion, has wired: "Quota accepted. Will do what we can first year. Reach goal in five." When it is recalled that thousands of people in this territory lost their homes, crops and personal property, and many of them their loved ones as well, the real character of their loyalty and faith is revealed, Dr. L. R. Scarborough, general director, declares. At a conference of Texas Baptist workers shortly after the hurricane it was voted to assume the quotas of the associations and churches in the stormswept area, thus relieving the Baptists there of outside obligations, but while this courtesy was appreci ated the people who had encountered heavy loss from the elements did not feel they could afford to accept the offer. And while the territory compris ing the Cameron-Hidalgo Associa tion, in the lower Rio Grande valley, was not so hard hit by the tropical storm, this section stood under water several feet deep for some time, due to floods and overflows, and the crops were ruined. But the people were not dismayed. The Baptists of that association not only accepted their quota of $75,000 for the five years, but took on an additional ob ligation of $25,000 as their con tribution toward the new Baptist sanitarium that is to be erectod in that part of tho State. Foreign Christians Give. On all foreign mission fields oc cupied by tho Southern Baptist Con vention the native Christians are responding generously to tho Baptist 75 million campaign, and will con tribute considerably more than $1,000,000 to this purpose, Dr. T. B. Roy, associate secretary of tho Foreign Mission Board, has notified Dr. L. R. Scarborough, general di rector. Tho South Brazil Mission loads tho Hst of mission fields with $450, 000, while the North Brazil Mission, not nearly so strong, has pledged $235.000. or $35,000 more than it was usked for. The South China Mission lias assumed $175,000, while the other two Chinese missions and those of Japan, Argentine. Chile, Mexico. Italy and Bohemia aro deli nitely organizing for their part in Hie campaign. With such responses on the foreign fields, Drs. Scarborough and Ray believe the home people will rally to the campaigns as they have never done before. Drop Baster Who Refused. Rural churches are quite as much alive to the issues of the Baptist 75 million campaign as the city churches, according to information received at general headquarters, one of the most interesting evidences of this being afforded in a story from Florida, where a country church re fused to call for another year the pastor who had refused to Hue up with the campaign. The members declared that they had rather have no pastor than an inactive one. Other Objects Besides Money. While it was raising the money which gave to tho Baptist 75 million campaign its name, the campaign would bo a failure if that were the sole object attained, Dr. L. R. Scar borough, general director, announces. To provide a staff of workers to carry out the enlarged program which tho large funds will make pos sible, 5,000 additional men and women were called for, and morn than that number have already re sponded. In addition to enlisting these vol unteers for the ministry, missionary work, medical missionaries, nursing. Christian teaching and the like, the campaign hopes to be the Instru ment of enrolling 2,000,000 addition al pupils in tho Baptist Sunday schools of the oouth, to win 2,500, 000 unsaved people to Christ during tho five-year program, to Increase the number of Baptist churches in tho South to 4 0,000, bring the num ber of enlisted Batplsts in this sec tion to 5,500,000, and to enroll 10, 000 young men and womon in the Baptist schools of the South to train for lives of Christian service. A system of enlistment and de velopment has been evolved whereby it ls boped to provont the great de nominational waste that has existed heretofore in the vast number of in active churches and church members in tho ranks of the Southern Baptist Convention.
