NO DIARY FOR HIM - One Experience Enough for Mr. Wilbur. I In Common With Most People, That "Bug" Had Bitten Him Once, and With Emphasis He Declares "Novar Again." As the 7:l.r> neared the station mi lers reached Into his pocket and drew forth a little leather-covered book. Ho shook down his fountain pen and wrole : "Day sunny. "I see," sahl Billers' friend Wilbur, glancing over his shoulder, "that you keep a diary." "Don't you keep a diary?" asked HU- j lers, placing his ?lally record back In Hs resting pince. .if I keep u diary I lose lt," replied Wilbur paradoxically, "and to keep a diary that you'd eventually lose ls hud business. "1 used to keep a diary. At one time lt wns my pct hobby. I'd buy (ho fanciest gilt-edged little hook I could lind, make a few entries and lose it immediately, it wns very annoying. "I used to make my entries too Inti mate. You know how lt Is. All dia rists do the same thing. While a ellary is In close communion with one's soul for a time, tho day comes when lt faces the world. "Imagine the foolishness of a man who writes the following In a diury that he knows heil eventually lose: " 'Called on Mary Jane last night. That she will accept me for better or worse I have no doubt. Carrlo will roto when she hears of my englue ment to Mary Jane I* I wrote lt. "Another entry read : 'What a dny 1 1 haven't a cent to my credit nt tho bank. And yet the world looks upon me ns nit example of prosperity. I hope 1 Cnn keep up tho bluff until thc tailor bas my wedding outfit delivered." I should worry when Mary June's dud bas a cool million. Oh, boy 1' The Inst notation I mndo was on n Friday, tho 13th, and, while not of a superstitious nature, a strungo feeling permeated ray soul as I penned the fol lowing: "'For a wedding present I believe Mary Jane's pn will give ber ut leant $100,000 In cash or collateral. While tho old man could easily afford more to begin with, I feel that moro will 'come later. I think he likes iu%. Why shouldn't he?' "I dropped the diary on Mary Jane's son porch us I went away that night, and when I discovered any loss yon cnn Imagine my feelings." ."Awful to contemplate I" exclaimed Billers. "Mary Jane found it and til was off, lil venture." "No," said Wilbur. "Mary Jane'fl little brother found lt, and being a businesslike little chap held lt up for a $10 ransom." MOTH Kit! BOY IS NOW MAKING GOOD Seems to Bo More Afraid of Brother Than of Germana and lt le Pre dicted He Will Make Qood Fighting Man. Camp Wadsworth, Spnrtnnburg, 8. C.-Among tho Maryland dr?ft mer. sent here ?onie weeks ago was a chap from Baltimore who claimed exemp tion from military service on tho ground thnt he was a conscientious ob jector of war. His name will not be made public, for lt has developed that he belongs to a good family. He wa? placed lu thc casual detachment for ob servation, nnd tho machinery of the In telligence department was put to work to learn something as to his antece dents. A few dnys later a tall, grim-look ing man appeared In camp and asked where tho conscientious objector could bo found. He was directed to the cnsnal detachment, and there Intro duced himself to tho commanding of ficer ns n brother of tho soldier In question and asked permission to have a talk with him. Tho permission was granted, and he went to his brother's qunrters. Part of the conversation wns overheard, and those who benni lt say lt was heated, although ono slded. Brother Said Something. "You yellow cur," exclaimed tho visiting brother. "We are nil ashamed of you at home, but you are going to do a man's part In this wnr. Mother told me to come down hore and mnko you withdraw that fool conscientious objector claim, and If you don't do lt I nm going to beat you to death right hero In this camp. What possessed you anyway?" There was a good deal more of the same kind. At the end of nbout an hour tho two brothers went before Major Coffin, the personnel ollleer. "Major," said the visitor, "my brother wants to withdraw the altldnvlt about being a conscientious objector. Cnn ho do lt?" "Well." replied Major Coffin, "lt must be n voluntary act on his part." Ano, turning to tho soldier, who had made the claim, he asked : "Do you want to do this voluntarily. Is lt of your own freo will?" The soldier moistened his lips and glanced nt his brother, and replied: "Yes, slr, lt ls of my own free will, and I wnnt to withdraw lt." Is Now Making Qood. Major Collin found the affidavit and tore lt up, and then Issued an order transferring the soldier to an active regiment, and the soldier left. After ho had gone thc visitor turned to Major Coffin and said: "Major, I thank you. I had determined there would be no yellow curs In my family, and If that boy hadn't withdrawn that affidavit I would have beaten him up right here. But I'm glad he did lt of his own freo will." The soldier who thought ho was a conscientious objector has been mak ing good ever since the visit of his brother. He seems, in fact, to be more afraid of hts brother than of the Ger mons, and those who have been watch ing him are of the opinion that he will make ns good a fighting man as any when the time conies to go over tho top.
