LOSSES MONEY WON'T REPLACE Potential Value of Live Stock Killed on Railroad Rlghtl of Woy in South j Carolina Upwards of $100,000 a Year ' But Lori? is In Meat and Leather Nocv cd by the Army-Protect Live Stock. Columbia.-Losses of live stock, killed on railroad rights of way, in ?South Carolina, aro upward? of $60,000 a yoar. Tho loss cannot, however, be measured in terms of money. A? Charles Barham, of tho Food Admin istration, traffic and transportation department, has expressed it, "Mo no y is the cheapest thing in America to day." The loss ii in meat and leather, ?o sorely needed by the govornment for tho nation's fighting men. Sinoe the greatest proportion of tho iosueu ?re in "scrub" atock-stock which could and otherwise would bo fatten ed and prepared for the slaughter himno-the potential loos, in meat, leather and fats, is probably more than $100,000 a year In South Caro lina alone. This is, furthermore, a loes which can be avoided. The State Council of Defense has realized tho seriousness of these flosses at a time when meat, leather and fats aro too precious to be wast ed; and following a conference hold this week with Mr. Barham and sev eral railroad officials, ls making a per sonni appeal to the owners of live ?took throughout the state, asking them, In the public interest and as a (patriotic duty, to keep their stock up Live stock owners are being asked to sign pledges to safeguard their ?tock against being killed or mahood by passing trains. There is only one way-.that ls to keep'the stock up so they oannot wander near the railroad Money cannot replace hogs and cattle hilled In this way. In communities whore there is no ?tock law in force, citizens are urged t>y the Council of Defense and the PVx>d Administration to protect their own Interests and the national inter est by taking immediate steps looking toward the adoption of such laws. TREAT YOUR SEED WHEAT BEFORE PLANTING Probably tho worst evil farm ers who plant wheat have to contend with is smut. Thou sands of bushels of grain are lost annually as a result of smut. Smut is a disease of wheat, and can be prevented absolutely. The method is to treat the seed before planting. Uso blue-atone or formaldehyde. Make good wheat and help win tho war by treating your seed wheat. Let Uncle Sam know you will do your part In making a real "Liberty Harreat." Treat your wheat.
