SERVED LON O AND WELL. last Saturday's Greenwood Jour nal contained the announcement that Kev. C. W (lardner, who has for many years been tho active head of iii? editorial department of The Journal, has retired from newspaper work, ile will i?e succeeded in the management nf the affairs and policy of the paper I? Iiis son, C. W. Gard ner, Jr. For :! I years Dr. (lardner was con nected with the newspaper business in Greenwood, and in that time he has done a great and good work for Greenwood and Ibo IMedmont section of South Carolina. The editorial policy adopted and followed closely by Dr. Gardner was strong and above reproach, ile luis Indollihly stamped his individuality and character upon the pages of the Greenwood Journal, and in his retiring from the field South Carolina journalism and the State Press Association have sus tained losses that aro not only rec ognized at the moment, hui that will be more fully realized ?ts time passes. His place, however, will he ably filled hy his son ?ind the men he has associated with him in Hie conduct of the Journal, and we feel sure that there will bo no lowering of the high standard of that paper. Wo wish for tho retiring editor that full measure of reward he so richly deserves at tho hands of a dis cerning public in tho city and county of Greenwood. Eor tho new mana ger and editor we bespeak a continu ance ot' that loyal support that thc good town of Greenwood has always accorded to, and which has been so richly deserved by. The Journal. TRAINING IMPERATIVE. 'J Purpose and Spirit of th? Summer School-Its Necessity. Tho Normal Training School for Teachers constitutes one of the lar ger branches of service which tho ? State offers to the educational inter est ot* South Carolina. Its purpose is to meet the growing needs of pub lic education 111 tho State and to adapt its work to include all thal is best in instruction, inspiration and in the spirit Of South Carolina and Oconce schools. Tin; work of the summer school, therefore, ls planned primarily to meed tho needs of Oconce teachers; ll is well adapted also to the needs j of primary and intermediate work, j The ideals tend to promote thorough- ' ness, enthusiasm and tho spirit of 1 service thal is found in all progr?s-!' she preparation for the great and,1 fascinating business of teaching. j1 That South Carolina recognizes the , training of her teachers ns one of j' her biggest problems of educational statesmanship is evidenced by the 1 existence; of so large and enthuslas-,1 tlc a body of teachers, made possible 1 by the combined co-operation of edu- | (rational and legislative forces In thc ( ; State. Such a condition promises well for the future of South Caro lina schools. The program of the 15118 summer school ls offered with the hope that ; it will meet the needs of all those , who may avail themselves of its set vices. Its Invitations are extended to all teachers: To teachers and prospective teachers who wish to Im prove their scholarship and methods; to teachers and prospective teachers who wish to do special work on the subjects in which they are most de- j (lclent; lo teachers and prospective teachers who wish to prepare for ? teachers' examin?t lon. Finally, to all others who may ? avail themselves of what the summer l school bas to offer in continuation ' of education or general culture. Special MUM Obligations. Because this is an unusual year , the lilts summer school will have j unusual obligations and special op- j port un it ies. In times of war tho danger of al lowing school standards to be low- '. ered must be overcome. The army and navy have drawn heavily from ! our men teachers; the civil service i has attracted many women teachers. Wo in II si help reinforce the teachers' ; ranks with the best equipped teach ors. We have no choice; WE MUST. Nothing is so important as the fu- ? turo. The future must be and will bc won. Standing by the govern- \ melli then becomes the Ilrst slogan of thc summer school. And the gov ernment must stand by its teachers. Standing by the teachers in those days of needed encouragement be comes ono of the high marks of sum mer school purpose. If ever the dlr DIM". ,1 .... .i i'.iii ui ?MUI> community nu- i co mos a necessity; and finally, the | emphasis upon the recognition of higher education for women was nevcu- so appropriate as now. The Oconee Summer School for Tea< hers recognizes with respectful loyalty tho difficult part that wo man must play in this war and tho deserved recognition sbo is receiving Bverywhere. Standing by woman's ad u cat lo ii is, therefore, not a matter af chivalry of words, but simple op portunity and obligation. Thomas A. Smith, Supt. of Education, Oconee Co.
