WAR TALKS By UNCLE DAN Number Five Jimmie and a German Boy Clash Must Do Three Things to Save Country. It was a warm evening, so Undo Dan went out to a lawn sent under the spreading branches of the great tree that suggested the farm's name bf Oak HUI. Billi? and Jimmie had been lay ing for him, so Uncle Dan was cap tured by the boys on short order. "Say, Uncle Dun," Billie began. "We had a red-hot argument nt school yes terday with Carl Newman. Carl said that denium schools were miles ahead of our schools and that no one could como up to the educated German. Well, Jimmie got hot under the collar and handed lt back to him good and plenty. Jimmie said If their education taught them to torpedo Lusitania'", sink hos pital ships, murder hundreds of wom en and Children, make nlnves of 'tho Belgians, poison wells, destroy fruit jtrees and commit all sorts of crimes, ithen we did not wnp! that kind of i education here. What do you think jObout it, Uncle Dani I told Jimmie ?you spent a lot of time in Europe and knew all about schools, so give us your ?opinion." "Well," replied Uncle Dan, deliber ately, "the German schools are very thorough ; they furnish ex :eedlngly vnl juable and practical Instruction. The 'Industrial training given there ls prob ?ably tho best to be found. The schools as a whole, however, In my opinion, ?appeal to the head only, and never to the heart. The atm and trend ls to moke the Individual blindly submls ifalve to the Prussian plan of world do minion; they teach that lt ls the des 'tiny of Germany to rule the world, and that to the glory and advance of Ger many, In this plan, all things must give WV J t,mt the kaiser as head of the ?date, can do no wrong If he carries forward the plan of world control. Some of the greatest teachers and preachers even defend and justify her heartless crushing of Belgians and the many other atrocious crimes she has committed In this wair. Thank God, otsr American education reaches both ^ the head and the heart. It ls an edu cation with a soul, and we must main tain the high ideals we have flxedj^n la word, In Germany, the people ore taught that they exist, for the govern ment, while here the government ex ists to serve the people./' ..Just walt a minute," Interrupted Billie. Say that over again slowly, so 'I can write lt down." Uncle Dan, smilingly, compiled. . Billie exclaimed t "Now; we will hand that nut out for Oort to crock. Carl, you know," continued Billie, "has a very. smart father who keeps him posted on the German arguments. Carl said our government was only * ah experiment anyway; that it would not lost twenty years, and that lt might burst up any old time. Jimmie asked him if Germany was so mighty good, why they did not go back there to live." "Our government will go on forever, ; won't lt, Uncle Dan?" ^ "Now," sold Uncle Dan, "you are Iralslng a big question, and one that j has troubled me for years. Our gov jernment ls still in the experimental (stage; In fac?, lt ls the greatest ex j p?riment ever unC v^tnken, and If pop ?ular government ls to be successful, a i% i few things must he done, otherwise, to (paraphrase the great Lincoln, the gov ernment pf the people, by the people ?and for the people, will perish. It ls my firm conviction," sold Uncle Dan, In a very Impressive manner, "that If four country ls to go on, as we hope iand pray, we must very quickly do ?at least three things, and I will name * j them ia the order of Importance as it ! appear* to me: "B^rst, adopt compulsory universal (military . training of ail young men I physically flt before they reach the ?age of twenty years. "Next, require that every foreigner who comes here to live must, within a 4 reasonable time, say a year, declare hts Intention of becoming an American citizen and take the necessary steps to do so, thereby, from thnt moment, a?^ suming all the obligations of citizen ship of our country, and that means he must defend our flag upon equal terms with our native born, and If he ts not #wllllng to da this, he should be sent back from whence he came." "That's the stuff," exclaimed Billie. "And, finally, enact such legislation as will make voting compulsory. Pop ular government ls based upon the participation of all and the rule of ? the majority, and democracy cannot continue and be successful unless we live up to tho spirit of the Institu tion. "The first step, however, Is ttio pass ing of the Chamberlain bill for univer sal military training. If you will get the leading citizen, and especially the .idttor of your, paper, to write personal setters to your congressman and both senators, urging their support, lt will help enormously. ? "I see by the morning papers," Bald Uncle Dan, "that the Rotary clubs of the entire country, the livest,/most effi cient organization to be found, have anlmously decided to get back of de Chamberlain bill and give lt loyal nd enthusiastic support. They will ork with tho Universal Military raining league to accomplis^ this lin ortnnt piece of legislation, which will o more than anything else to make us . renl nation with n common view- j Int, bring us back 4o sane living, nud ch us the patriotism of service."
