GERMAN AGENTS BACK PLOT ? ] Virginia Prisoners Attempt to Escape as Trial Begins. Big Stu ie Gap, Va., Aug. 16.-J\V. V. McCoy and J. Wi Phipps, ou trial in Federal Court here as a result o? their alleged activities in organizing mountaineers to evade the selective draft law, and whom witnesses to day testified were backed by German agents, attempted to escape from jail to-night by sawing the bars to their cell windows. The attempt was frus trated when another inmate of tho Jail uct'fled the authorities. They were aided uy two other prisoners, it was said. Phipps and McCoy are under a heavy guard to-night, and other pris oners were carried to the county con vict camps until repairs are made on the jail. l'hlpps and McCoy were put on trial to-day hud the first case will go to the jury Bomo time to-morrow. A charge of "enlisting men for the pur pose of waging war against the Uni ted States" was thrown out on in struction of the court. The charge on which they were being tried is "conspiring to seize and destroy arms and munitions of war." Evidenco offered in the trial for conspiracy against the government, which began before Federal Judge McDowell to-day, tends to show that German agents had used large sums of money and other inducements to inspire the mountaineers to rebellion. In his opening address to the court District Attorney Byrd said the government would show that Phipps and McCoy had been offered ten thousand dollars for their leader ship work in arousing the people of that section to open rebellion. Late this afternoon the court in structed the jury to bring in a verdict of not guitty on the charge of "re ? emiting for the purpose of waging war on the United States." Eleven witnesses were examined on the charge of "conspiracy to seize and destroy arms and munitions of the government," and this charge will be submitted to the jury to-morrow. ' One other count of the five indict ments to be tried after this is "inter ference with the war draft." Witnesses examined to-day testified that they had been approached by McCoy and Phipps with proposals to join an organization to rob banks in f, several towns in this community, de stroy railway property and otherwise interfere with the movement of war supplies and the drafting of men for war service. p District Attorney Byrd, in his open ing address, said the government was f prepared to show that McCoy and (Phipps were offered ten thousand dollars by German agents to lead the conspiracy against the government. Johnson also testified that McCoy had told him that the Germans would give the conspirators under fe McCoy and Phipps $30,000 for blow ing up three important railroad bridges in this section. He said this statement was made to him by 'McCoy while he was in McCoy's shop and saw the money. He swore that ho had been called to the shop by Mc Coy and solicited to join in the con splracy. He refused to have any thing to do with the matter. It was before he had refused that he had seen the money in the bucket. . State of Ohio, City of Toledo,] Lucas County-ss. Frank J. D. 1, Aug. 16. -Special: The health of our people is good, and crops are looking fine. This of course makes us feel good, even if the war ls on. Some of our boys have recently stood the examination under the new draft law, and are at home awaiting further instructions. The pastors' conference of tho Bea verdam Association met at the Long Creek church with Pastor Z. I. Hen derson on Monday after the fourth Sunday In July, and a very interest ing program was rendered, but possi bly the most interesting feature of the day's session was a sermon deliv ered by Pastor 'Martin, of Emmanuel church, Westminster. The commu nity turned out to hear the sermon and every one seemed to be delighted. Dinner was served on the grounds, and of course Long Creek never falls j on that part. We have been looking forward for some time for work to be begun on the new dormitory for Long Creek Academy, but not until Thursday, August 9th, was work really begun. Now, however, Robt. N. Smith, fr?nt West Union, with a bunch of men, are building a concrete wall for the foundation, and before this ls in print the carpenters will be cutting fram ing, and within thirty days we are hoping to see the building complete and ready to accommodate the stu dents who come to enter our school. But this ls not all. A plan for an other building-an auditorium-is in the hands of the foreman, and as soon as the bill can be figured out, the timber will be cut, and it is hoped that both buildings will be completed this summer. With these buildings onr school will be prepared to do greater things than ever before. And if you are looking for a place to send your boy or girl to school, you can't beat Long Creek Academy any where In the State or out of it. Our protracted meeting will begin the third Sunday In August. Rev. L. H. Raines is to do the preaching, and we are expecting a great meet ing. Three cars, loaded> with people from Anderson county, came to tho academy yesterday and will be here for some time. Those who are look ing for a place to spend a summer va cation could do nothing better than come to Long Creek. Everything ls right to make this an ideal summer ing place. _^ mw First Hole of 8. C.
