NjM-ehiliKtts Now Kay Altitude M ut tors lilttle-Rest ls Hie Thing. Physicians have changed all their ideas about consumption In the last few years. The extent of this revo lution is described in "Ha Parola del Medico," by I>r. Antonio Stella, of New York, who was one of the offi cial representatives of the United states at the International Tubercu lar Congress in Rome in 1012. Ile points out that specialists no longer order consumptives to Colorado or Now Mexico, that they insist no more Upon high altitudes, that sanatoria tire considered ol' value* only because they segregate patients and keep them from spreading the diseuse, and that the ancient Idea that tuberculo iss was inherited is thoroughly ex ploded. "What ls of prime importance in the treatment ol' tuberculosis," sass1 Dr. Stella, "is absolute rest, in a j climate where there is abundance of sunshine and fresh, pure air, with a | medium and not very variable lem- | perature which permits the sick lo remain in the open air tho greater ; part of thc time. The altitude malt tera little or not. at all." The favorite treatment now is at homo, because the results are more ? permanent than those obtained else where. "According to tho latest sta tistics by Hammer, Croissant and Flshherg," says Dr. Stella, "the Im provement is symptoms obtained hy home treatment almost always en dures, while that of the sanatoria in the greater number of cases is lost as Boon as tho patient returns home." Not only is consumption no longer regarded as hereditary, but a theory that ls just the opposite is beginning to bo ace-opted. This is the theory of | inherited humanity, first set forth by j Col. Rho of the Malian navy ten ' years ago, and continued by tho ob servation of such great specialities as the Italians Sanarelll and Muff neel, the French Landouzy and the Rus sian M otc h otk off. "Science," says Dr. Stella, "is ask ing to-day, 'Do the children of con sumptives Inherit from their parents a greater disposition to disease or a greater power of overcoming and , surviving tubercular infection?' Andi Sanarelll replies: 'll the entire hu man race does not succumb to tuber- j enlar pandemic it is due to a pro- j gressivc hereditary i m muni/.al ion ; transmitted from generation to gen eration and reinforced by an uncoil- i scions vaccination produced by the general penetration of the ubiquitous Koch bacillus Into the organism.'
