( Constitution, 1 2th ) While hundreds of happy swim mers Ulled the lake at Piedmont Park, and thousands of spectators lined the shores at this popular re sort Sunday afternoon, J. Scott Bates foll Into the water and was drowned before help could reach him. lt was Ibo Hist fatal accident of the year. Bates, who was well known at the park, and generally considered an excellent swimmer, was fully dressed al the time. Ile was standing on the bank, leaning over and washing his hands in the water, when he slipped and fell in. Before nearby bathers were able ..o reach the scene, he had gone down, and when his body was pulled out on the bank, it was too late. Spectators who witnessed the drowning state that Bates had evi dently been drinking. In fact, he was released from the police barracks only a few hours before he was drowned, after spending the night in tho lock-up on a charge of drunk and diso rderly. (Tho Stat?, 12th.) Hov. Thomas H. Leitch, formerly superintendent of t/ie Oliver Gospel Mission, died suddenly at a Colum bia hospital last night about 10.30 | o'clock. For 2 0 years Mr. Leitch had been an evangelist of the Methodist Epis copal church, and io this capacity had hoon throughout South Carolina and in many sections of the United States from Now York to Denver, and in the South. Mr. Leitch, who became editor ol' The Way of Faith about a year ago, succeeding Rev. James M. Dike, was boru in Loudon, England, in 1850. lie came to America at the ago of three years, and up until three years ago had spout a large part of bis life in Charleston. Ile there became a local preacher in tho Methodist church and was not connected direct ly with the conference. Mr. Leitch is survived by lils wife, two daughters, Misses Jennie and Maybelle Leitch, all of Columbia; a son, T. J. Leitch, in the United States navy, and two sons In Charleston, W. W. and H. M. Leitch. Mr. Leitch and his family lived at the Oliver Gospel Mission, of which lu; was the active superintendent, on coming to Columbia. Ile had con tinued his connection with the mis sion since assuming the duties of editor of The Way of Faith, a weekly religious paper published lu Colum bia with an international circu?;.(ion. Active charge ol the Oliver Cospel Mission was taken over only yester day by Rev. R. L. Todd, who has had wide experience in missionary work. Three Killed in Atlanta. Acanta. June 10.-Three men were killed and four men and a wo man were painfully hurt here to night by the falling roof ol' a one story skating rink. Rains of the past week accumulated a large quantity of water on the roof, the police said, and probably caused lt to fall in. Among the injured, all of whom were suffering chiefly from bruises and lacerations, was Miss Lillian Perry, aged 2 2. ticket seller at tho rink. The dead were identified as follows: Hugh Drew, aged 21, grocery clerk, formerly of Tallapoosa, Ga.; J. A. Kimball, of Jackson, Ga.; Jack Con liff, lioor manager of the rink. June ll.-According toa dispatch to-day from Ymuiden, Hol land, the crew of a trawler which was taken by the Germans to Cuxhaven, hut was later released, declared they learned at Cuxhaven that of the Gor man vessels participating in the Skagerrak battle six great war ves sels and 17 destroyers did not return. Among the names of the vessels re ported lost, adds the dispatch, the sailors say they heard the Ost fries land, a battleship of 22,410 tons, mentioned. Naval Flyer Killed. Pensacola. All the available fire apparatus of this city was rushed to the scene. Many of the mon working in the place were compelled to jump 180 feet from the top of the building into the harbor. Motor boats and tugs picked up the men as they reached the water. An unconfirmed report was current later that 25 members of the crew of the Dutch steamship Wilhelm Von Driel were trapped tn the hold of the ship and had lest their lives when a wall of the elevator toppled over on the ship. Petrograd, Juno 1 I.-Continuing their offensive movement in Volhynla and Galicia, 'Russin troops yesterday took prisoner 401) officers and 35, 000 men, says the olllcial statement issued hero to-day. The Russians also captured 30 guns and an enorm ous quantity of booty. Since the present offensive was started a week ago to-day the Rus sians have taken about 10S.000 pris oners.
