OCONEE SCHO A Last Friday Proved to Be Schools of Oconee-I Made by the Various Oconee School Fair and Field Day for 1916 has passed. It was a great day in every respect. There were eas ily between 5,000 and 6,000 people here from all parts of the county to enjoy the day. There was no unpleas ant incident anywhere to mar the day. The weather could not have approached nearer to the ideal, and the whole demeanor of the thousands that thronged Dbe streets was in har mony with tho day-bright, smiling, uniformly pleasant. The assembled crowds were calculated to inspire ad miration and pride In the hearts of all. Walhalla was glad to have tho jM?ople of Oconee assemble 'Within ber borders. We believe the welcome ex tended was accepted by all In the same full-hearted 'manner that it was given. Walhalla is botter for the assembling of Oconee's population ia our midst, and it is her hope that a feeling of closer kinship has been es tablished on all sides. At thc Opening of Field Day Mayor W. M. Brown delivered a splendid address of welcome in tho 'high school auditorium. His welcome came from the heart and his words wer? well chosen. He was followed by (?. W. Irby, principal of 'the Keo wee Graded School, who made the response on behalf of tho schools of Sconce. He was followed by lt. T. Jaynes, Esq., and Major Wm. J. Stripling, each making only brief re marks and leaving all possible time for the Children of the schools and their friends to mix and mingle and ?prepare themselves for the various contests of the day. The Afternoon (Oiliest At 3 o'clock Friday afternoon the recitation and declamation contest for Taral schools was held in the au ditorium. The audience was small, this very attractive feature of the day's work coming into conflict with the athletic events, which drew tho major part of the crowds, leaving possibly a hundred to witness the contest, which was one of the best of the day. In the recitations Miss Thelma Smith, of the West Union school, took first honors. Her recitation -was en titled, "Savco." Second place came to Miss ida Beth Doyle, of Bounty Land school. It was really a hard matter to make a decision as be tween these two ! ttle ladles. Lit tle -Miss Doyle's recitation was "The Arab's Farewell to His Steed." Misa Smith was awarded the recitation prize, which was given by R. A. Mc Lees; of Walhalla. John1 Edwards, of the Fairfield school, rook first honors lu the decla mation contest, using as his declama tion I resident Wilson's speech to the Gridiron Club. Mr. Edwards was awarded the declnlmers' prize, which was given by Dr. J. W. Bell, of Wal halla. Second place went to Herman Alley, of the West Union school. Foi second place there was another close contestant, Lewis Rankin, of the Bounty Land school. As between these two there were but few points difference, and neither was far from the record made by the winner ot first place. Thc Oratorical Contest was held Friday night in the Wal halla High School auditorium, a large audience being present. Thc speakers acquitted themselves ad mirably. The judges of the contest at the close of the program made the following awards: First Place-Ellison Smith, Wal halla High School. Mr. Smith was presented a medal offered by W. L. Verner, of Walhalla. Ills subject was: "Spartacus to the Gladiators." Second place was won by Jim Sul livan, of the Westminster High School, and he was awarded the me dal offered for this place by thc Oratorical and Athletic Association ills subject, was: "Preservation ol America." Jefferson McMahan, of the Rich land school, received honorable -men tion. Ills' subject was: "American ideals." ?HE ly VENTS OF THE DAV were many and varied. The chil dren of the schools competed witt each other, and the results of theil labor, literary and otherwise, com bined to make up a day's entertain ' ment of unexcelled merit. The lengbl of the list of winning schools ame pupils prevent minute details anti wo confine ourselves to a simple ac COU<nt of Hie awards in the various branches, which are as follows: Exhibits-Domestic Art.
