Walhalla adv. -Carly last Wednesday morning tie alaria of (: e was given am! early risers were given au opportunity to "run for it," Inn few reached the -cene of tb" tire before it was a hope less mass, and none in time to save anything from the building. The house that wa. destroyed was located next west of the I ai t beran-ch u ich and was owned by Warren Smith, an em ployee of t!-.e Walhalla Cotton Mills, he being one of the overseers. The Iirst alarm was given about (J o'clock, the tait that there was a tire being first noted by W. S. Cross, who was on h.s way into town to his work, lie endeavored to force the doors but was unable to do so, and went for assistance, When he re turned with others the building was so far gone as to prevent any OIK; going near to the structure. Mr. Smith. ti?" owner, was one of the earl; arrivals, but readied the place too lat" to accomplish anything. At Hie (MIK- he hoard the first alarm he was eat inc breakfast in tho home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Chambers, with whom he boards during the absence of Mrs. Smith, who is in Georgia at her patents' lome. Mr. Smith had no lire in the house for several (lays, and Hie origin of it is a mystery. An explanation, however, is doubtless found in the fact that Mr. Smith had med a large lamp, which had been burning for a while witli a strong blaze, As he left the house hur riedly to get his breakfast and go to work, he blew down the lamp chim ney ? nd the blaze apparently was ex tinguished. lt is just possible, how ever, that the blaze was blown into the bowl of the lamp, causing an ex i lot on shortly after Mr. Smith's halla, S. The loss is considerable for Mr. Smith, though he and Iiis wife wore very fortunate indeed, having a policy ol insurance for $1,200 over the building and contents.
