The wilt disease of cotton, which has been very prevalent this season, lias caused heavy losses to many Southern farmers. It has proved a serious problem in some sections, where not only lias the disease ma terially reduced the yields, but has spread to fields not known to he pre viously infected. Already this dis ease is present in thousands of acres of the best cotton lands of the South and may prove destructive for an in definite number of years. These facts should serve to direct attention to tin? valuable work that is being car ried on for the improvement of cer tain varieties of resistant cotton for the <ontroi of this disease. In order to maintain resistance in cotton careful breeding is necessary, livery farmer wdio has cotton wilt on bis farm does not have the time or ls not properly qualified to carry on sys tematic breeding work, but he may lake advantage of the work thal is being done by tile use of well tired seed. Several years ago department spe cialists realized thal to supply the demand good wilt resistant seed must be produced on a larger scale. A co-operative agreement was enter ed into to breed and grow these seed. This co-operative breeding work bas been carried on in South Carolina, (borgia and Alabama, with results which demonstrate the value of high grade seed. The work in South Carolina has been in co-operation with the South Carolina lOxperiment Station and un der the persona) supervision of a rep resentative of the department and station. lt was begun In 1911 and excellent progress has been made by the co-operative breeders. The success of this co-operative breeding work, not only in South Carolina, hut In Georgia and Ala bama as well, will enable many far mers to ?ontroi the wilt disease on The Perfection ii -a gallon of oil comfort. The oilier day a Dayton distiller sent out to a selected list a "very spe cial otter" ol' "private stock whiskey" at a low "introductory price." Among those who received tiiis ol ler was Dr. A. T. Abernethy, ot' Greensboro, N. C. Ile paid no atten tion to ihi' form letter, so later was favored with a "follow-up," express ing surprise that he had failed to take advantage of this "rare oppor tunity"-"the greatest offer we ever presented tn the men ol' America. * ? Thousands of men jumped at the op portunity to try tills superb whiskey, and we cannot understand why we did not hear from you. Now, we ask you -as man to mab-can'! you use a quart of rich, pure whiskey lu your home? * * * Stop and consider what we are offering. * * * Don't put this off as you did before. Slip your remittance in the order card herewith, and we'll see that the goods go forward hy the first express." Doctor Abernethy did pay atten tion to this second letter. Ile an swered it at some length, and his re ply, as recently printed in Everything, a Greensboro imper, was as follows: "You say you can't understand why you did not hear from me. Yes. and I, too, am surprised that you have not heard from me. 1 have used your rye whiskey in the past, and I ?nive used the red rye whiskey of other distillers ol' your kind, and 1 am Bur prised thal they have not all Heard from nie. "You should have heard from me when I drew a fortune of $30,OOO out Of the hanks and wasted it in riotous living, reveling with other unfortu nate men under the demoniac al chemy and spell of your devilish de coction. You should have heard from me when 1 threw away a repu tation equal to that of any young man in America for the privilege of making an outcast and wreck of my self drinking your vile whiskey. "I will admit. I have been remiss in not letting you hear from nie long before this time. I should have writ ten you with a pen made from the plumage plucked from the hird of paradise that 1 drove from my con tented and happy home; 1 should nave penned you in my heart's blood on the occasion of the burial of my gray-haired mother, whose heart I broke by my conduct while under the devilish influence of your damnable stuff. I should i '.ve kept you in formed. I should hdve 'reported pro gress.' When I awoke to the sad re alization that, from a man carrying degrees and titles of honor from the greatest universities and started well up the ladder of recognition tts tba author of more than nineteen histor ical works, I had fallen into mental, moral, physical and financial bank ruptcy, 1 should have called on you. 1 should have wended my way into your richly decorated private office in Dayton, the walls ol' which are crim soned with the blood ol thousands of human wrecks, and there demanded of you that you give me the reward of my faithful vassalage to your devilish, demoralizing, disease-mak ing, mind-wrecking business. "But if 1 have been remiss in let ting you hear from me, remember that you will hear from me in tho fu ture. 1 am now a preacher of the Gospel, and I am making it my busi ness to let not only you, but every other manufacturer of the liquid damnation that is utilized in hell's communion service, know that I am hoing heard from. You make your appeal to me as man to man; and it is because you are not a man and be cause your infernal business unmans men that I am lighting it to the hitter end with all the reconsecrated pow ers left in the former man that your demoralizing dope could not destroy. You urge me to stop and consider; and it is because I have stopped and considered thal I am eternally and everlastingly the sworn enemy to your nefarious business so long as I shall hereafter be permitted to live." Of course, the Dayton distiller had liol time to look up each of his "pros pects" before sending out the letters. Dui even il he had looked up Doctor Abernethy he might hi e had trou ble in getting needed details though the Christian Advocate now supplies the lack. ;.s follows; "Doctor Abernethy ls a man with a history, the son of a minister, born in a college president's home, a scho lar with high devices, a college pro fessor himself, au editor of learned periodicals and the author of half a dozen volumes.
