IN FU H IOU GASOLINE. TIMI I ?rle? Hu? Advanced, But th? (Quality is Low. ( Atlanta Constitution. ) Just at a time when the price of gasoline in Georgia has been jumped up to 20 cents a gallon, we aro con fronted wii'n t e fact that Inferior grades of it are oeing supplied the consumer throughout the State, o'tea under the brand of the higher quality. Gasoline of lid. ti t a"d Gt! spec!Pc gravity aro radically difieren! sub stances, so much so that only in? past summer Ut certain Atlanta sta lions there was au advertised defer ence Of 3 to 1 ceil's per gallon ii. price between the 00 and the G4 spe cific gravity quality. Frequently when t'?0 gravity gasoline was quote] al 10 cents, the price of tile 64 grav ity was 1 :? .cuts This gives same idea ol" the dilforenco in qus.lity ned. ? \ewiso. the diifi ronco ia service ren dered by the two grades. So importan, is the gradi' of ga ,o I] .e supplied, considered, that tm; I cg'slature provided for its Inspec tion with tile requirement, under penalty of punishment as for a mis demeanor, that the actual grade be stated by sign posted upon containing tanks at supply stations; and the duly of Inspection as well as the en forcement of the law as to branding was assigned to the State Depart ment of Agriculture. Now complaint reaches the depart ment that gasoline of the lower spe cific gravity is being sold at many stations throughout the State- not in Atlanta alone, but from one end of the State to the other under the brand of the better quality or the higher gravity. This is nothing more nor less than a swindle, pure and simple. The insult of deception ls thus aided to the injury of extortion. When the retail dealers, under du ress from the monopolistic purvey ors of this commodity were coin pelled to put up the price some 70 . per cent above that charged in the cities of the Middle West, The Con- . stitutlon defended them against any | responsibility, because we realized ! that it was a big thing with which | they bad nothing to do. lt was clearly the work of the big producing companies, and they should be held to account for it. Hut the dealer himself cannot es cape responsibility for deceiving the j public as to the grade of gasoline he is handling. This is a matter that is very easy of determination, and the public is entitled to protection against those dealers who sell a ?><> Specific gravity gasoline under the pretense that it is 64. According to reports reaching the Department of Agriculture, viola tions of the law have been widespread and numerous, lt ls stated that 9 ft per cent of the samples received hy the department from tilling stations In all parts of tho State have fallen below the advertised specifications. In other words, people all over the State have been paying the price for an article which they did not get. The d?partaient must make good on Its promise of rigid investigation and prosecutions for violations found, for if this rank deception is continued the department Itself will be directly esponsible, (Jot Hid of Those Poisons in Your System ! Twelve Life-Termers Given Freedom for Pellagra Test. New Orleans. La., Nov. 4.--"I | have been through a thousand hells," sobbed a thin, gaunt man. with glassy eyes and skin like parch ment, as lie staggered into a New Or leans hotel to-day. "I am W. ll. English, one of the eleven convicts released from the .Mississippi penitentiary for risking their lives to prove that an unbal anced diet caused pellagra," the emaciated victim of science explained as he sank Into a chair and allowed his head to fall between his knees. Later in the day english consented to write his own story of Dr. Gold berger's test, which shows that pel lagra is non-communicable and ls caused by an unbalanced diet such as ls common among, the poorer classes in the South. The story as written by him follows: "I was a life-term convict, so when Governor Brewer and Dr. Ooldberger offered freedom to any one who would live on a prescribed diet for nine months, even though it meant contracting pellagra and probably death, I gladly consented to make the test. Freedom is mighty sweet, and I was willing to face death to secure it. But 1 believe I have paid in full for my crime. Nine months of tor- I ture, just think of it ! Attempted Suicide. "Several of us tried suicide during the last few : onths. but wo were watched night and day. At any time I would have glady welcomed a bul let, bul our guards only laughed when \.o attempted to escape. They knew we could not break out, and, in our weakened condition, could not have gone far if we bad secured our freedom. "1 have read various newspapers telling all about Dr. Goldberger's discovery, the triumph of medicine, bul not one word have I read of the poor wretches who have been tortur ed for '_'7<i days. At least two of the pellagra squad made formal applica tion to the penitentiary board to be sent hack to serve their life terms in preference to the suffering they un- j derwent. These two were Guy R. 1 .lames and I). \V. Pitts. "Five weeks ago six of us fainted one day and had to be put to bed. "To think ol eating the same kind of food for nine months. Our ra tions three times a day for this pe riod was: Collards, hominy, corn bread, fried mush and coffee. This is thc food used by the poorer classes down here and they are tho ones who contract pellagra Other Food Denied Them, . We were promised turnips and cabbage a few limes a week when we made the agreement to face death hy the scourge, but in July those who were making the experi ment decided we were holding our own to an extent and these vegeta bles were eliminated. "Fer the lirsl few months 1 felt only lazy and stupid. Along about ! July i began to lose weight. At thal time 1 tipped the scales at 1 ?!7 pounds. Now I weigh IIS pounds, i After the first three months I never I had a good night's sleep. It was more of a stupor, accompanied by unnatural parching ol the skin and occasional sweats. I finally got so al] 1 wanted to do was to stretch out \ on my hunk and think of milk and ' fresh vegetables. "1 thought of the time when I was a child and was eating one of my mo ther's good dinners. My visions were ! all of fresh food. I got so weak tn I tho past few weeks that 1 would hardly move. The constant diet put before me almost brought on nausea. My skin became saffron and felt like it was going to crack. We were told ' to play cards and exercise, but did ' not have the ambition to do it. When Governor Brewer pardoned us yesterday he told us we could re main in thc penitentiary and he cured hy the balanced diet treatment. One might think Ulis invitation would be accepted by some, bul not even one of the eleven accepted the invitation. The twelfth broke down two months ago and was sent home. "Wo all just wanted to get away from tho scene of our torture. The first thing I did was to drink a quart of cool milk, and then I lilied up on vegetables and pie. "Pr. Goldberger told us how to cure ourselves, and T am certainly trying to do it. Ile said to eal fresh meat, eggs, milk, peas, heans and other vegetables, and you bol I am going to do as, he says. I must go to bed now. as I (eel faint and want to be strong enough to start for Cali fornia to-morrow." As Bnglish finished writing his story on hotel stationery he had to he assisted (o his room. Still he has gained nearly two pounds since yes terday and is becoming cheerful. - ?i Cures Old Sores, Other Remedies Won't Cure.
