MCLAURIN TO NEW YORK. Presumably to ('?asidor Matters in Codon Situation. Columbia, Sept. 30.-Senator John L. McLaurin has boon called to New York, presumably for a conference on the cotton situation. It will be re membered that In August he suggest ed in a letter to President Wilson that the allies he extended a credit for the purchase of supplies in this country. Senator McL-aurit) said he had reason to believe that the Ger mans were buying cotton here; that il was inconceivable that a nation so far-sighted would permit England to obtain a monopoly in this important munition of war. Even if peace were declared to-morrow and England had the surplus cotton, she could compel the continent to buy it at n large liront. It would be a singular con dition, when we remember the situa tion last fall, to see foreign govern ments competing in our markets for cotton. Asked what made him say Germany was buying cotton, he said. "Well. I think it better not to say too much; busim ss people don't want their af fairs paraded In the newspapers." lt is magnificent the way the farm ers are holding. The present advance is due to cheap money. Low prices itt the fall have come heretofore from the contraction of credit. This is the first time that we have had extension of (tedit. just when needed, at tue crop marketing period. Direct Sales. Col. Thnckston said that "In the development of the state warehouse system we have just reached the re ally big tiling In it direct sales of cotton from the farm to the con sumer. This means a stable price for cotton and standardization ol' grades. Tito commissioner has done a great work in providing negotiable security which enables tho gradual marketing of the crop, but, after all, borrowing money on cotton is a mere temporary expedient; thc main thing is to sell advantageously. We do not grow codon to warehouse; we grow it to sell. "My pbuis at present have not been formulated, and 1 prefer to say noth ing until after more mature delibera tion and a more thorough acquaint ance with the plans of the Federal government. 1 will say, however, that tho result can only be achieved hy the co-operation of the individual farmers. Tho organization of the farmers for marketing purposes is tho foundation. 1 believe that the success in securing credits at this unusual time for the advance of cot ton prices at the marketing period is such a lesson that the farmers of the South are prepared now to go further, lt inspires them with con fidence, and teaches them the value of combined effort. "There is no reason why, with the machinery which Mr. McLaurin has perfected, to wit, the state ware house system, thal the farmers of this State cannot organize and con trol absolutely the sale of this year's cotton crop." TALKED DISTANCE 2,500 MILES - I Without Aid of Wirt>-Voice Trans mission is Wonderful. Washington, Sept. 2!).- Long dist- ! ame wireless telephone co m mu nica- ', lion was accomplished for the first time to-day when experiments, ex- ; tending over several months, cu lull- j nated In successful transmission of the human voice hy radio from Ar lington, Va., to Mare Island, Cal., 2,500 miles away. The experiments were conducted under direction of Capt. Hilliard, chief of the navy's radio service, in co-operation with the American Tel ephone and Telegraph Company and the Western F.lectrlc Company. Sec retary Daniels, announcing the re sult to-night, predlcited that fur ther development of wireless tele phony would make great changes in long distance communication, both for military and naval service and commercial usage. Successful Operation of a device for automatically transferring to the radio telephone conversations origi nating on wire circuits also was ac complished. President T. N. Vail and other officials of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company al New York, talked easily with the Mare Island station, the conversa tion traveling over an ordinary me tallic Uni' from New York to Arling ton and thence by radio across the continent. "The fact that the voices can be stalled on a land wire and automati cally transmitted to a voice radio transmitter," said Secretary Dan iels, "holds out hope that persons in land should readily be put in touch by telephone with others at sea through some central transmitting station." The Navy Department's formal announcement follows: "Secretary Daniels is pleased to announce the successful outcome of experiments which have been carried on for the last few months by tho American Telephone and Telegraph Company and Western Electric Com pany in co-operation with radio sta tions under jurisdiction of the Navy Department by which long distance wireless telephony has been made possible."
