Claim .Minor Cains. J Uerlin, Jan. 20.-The Cern?an ofll "ial statement, issued this afternoon, claims minor successes at: several points, notably at Notre Dame de Lo rette and Ii? Hie Argonne, where ROO yj>rds have been gained. In the for es.t north of Sennheiin the German r.dvance, it says, has beet) satisfac tory. The announcement follows: "In the western arena of the war the territory between the seacoast and the Dys saw yesterday nothing more than artillery exchanges. At Notre Danie de Lorette, northwest of Arras, a trench 200 yards long was taken from the enemy. Here two machine guns were captured as well as a few prisoners. "In the Argonne our troops occu pied a few trenches. I II one place thc ground gained by us during tile last few days amounts to E?00 yards. "In the fores! north of Sennheiin iCernuy ), in Alsace, our attack made good progress. Air/stein was taken by us and wc also captured two offl cers and m men of the Alpine elias sen rs. "In thc eastern area of tho war tho situation shows no change." French Regain Lost Position. Caris, Jan. 20. The loss and re capture of a trench north of Notre Dame de Lorette and the repulse of Cern?an attacks in the region of Al bert, at La Bolsselle and at La Fon taine aux Charmes made up tho French official war report issued heit? to-night. The afternoon report announced absolute nuiel on some parts of the battle line in France, artillery en gagements Of greater or less severity it others, md a spirited Infantry en counter at other places. None of the engagements recorded seems to have boen of great importance. German Airships Attack Again. London. Jan. 20.-The Cern?an airships-for they are thus described hy Hie German official report-which raided the coast towns of Norfolk last night, dropped 20 or more bombs. The missiles killed four persons in juring ten or more and did considera ble property damage. A report that a fifth person, a soldier, had been killed, proved incorrect. Yarmouth and King's Lynn, the largest towns visited, suffered the heaviest dam; e. Fight bombs were dropped in Yarmouth, one killing an Old man and an old woman, injuring three others and smashing every win dow within a radius of several hun dred yards. At King's Lynn, a woman and a hoy were killed and the bombs de molished a raw of cottages. The air craft also visited Cromer, which, however, was not attacked; Sherringham, where four bombs were dropped: Dcersinghaui, Grimston, Snot lisbali; and Heat ham, each of which received one missile. Snetlishnm and Headlam are within three miles of the King's Sandringham residence. Near the former place, where the windows of the village church were shattered, Queen Mother Alexander has a .sum mer bungalow W hat ((?inposed the raiding Meet is still a matter of discussion. Major Astley, who commanded the National Reserve al King's Lynn, Bays he will report oflicially that one of the latest Zeppelin dirigibles took part. They can bo built more quickly than Zeppelins, but are slower and carry less ammunition. Whether by coincide nce or because the British and French authorities bad expected the raid, more stringent regulations as to lighting went into effect last night both in Paris and London. As a consequence of the raid in surance rates against ila mage by air craft were doubled to-day. A largo business was done even at the higher rates. Bombs Dropped oil Essen. Arnelm, Netheralnds, Jan. 21.-A passenger arriving to-day from Ger many asserts that allied airmen yes terday threw bombs upon the town of Essen, destroying a number of houses. Essen is the home of the j Krupp steel works. Germans Rejoice. Berlin, Jan. 2 1. The first pages I of all the Berlin morning newspapers I were given to-day to the attack ol' j Zeppelins on the English coast. The scanty reports from the eastern and western war theatres occupied incon spicuous places on inside pac.es. With remarkable unanimity the German press appears to expect that this raid will be followed shortly by others. While the amount of dam age done is liol ye! known, satisfac tion is expressed in the fad thal nil ?the Zeppelins returned safely and in the announced belief that the moral effect or the bombardment cannot fail to be very great. "Tlie isolation of the British is lands is conquered successfully," says The Morgen Post In its com ments on the Germain air raid in I England. "Of what use to G rea I Britain," it adds, "are the surrounding seas and war vessels il our airships cross tho water, dropping bombs?" The Tages Zeitung exnressos satis faction at Ibo first air attack, and hopes it will be followed by others, while The Tageblatt says it is now clear that the North Sea is no hin drance to German airships, French Nearing Miine.
