THE DHUNKAIID'S HORSE. (By Will P. Lockhart.) All ?lay 1 stand In tho norther's blast. The snow, or the whistling sleet. For my cruel master ties tue fast, To the rack by the village street; He leaves me here from morn till night There's a low rumshop near by. Then wonder not at my cruel plight, For a drunkard's horse am 1. All day I stand in th? scorching heat Ho you wonder which is worse. The winter time with its snow and sleet. Or thc summer and torturing thirst? Ah. often a day and night I stand. And tho new day's sun is high Fro he quits the drunken ribald baud. For a drunkard's horse am I. When he mounts, at last. I feel the weight Ol' the drunkard's hand and heel. The frenzied slaves of a seething hate That revels with lash and steel. Then mile on mile at my utmost speed. Because I must speed or die. Oh, hard is my way of life, indeed, For a drunkard's horse am I. Yes, shaggy and gaunt and bony 1 am. Half lamed by my broken knees; My ruptured lungs bring UKI:;)' a qualm, And my breath is a strident whee''.. I'm hlP'oi-y and thirsty both night and day, And my shelter's thc pitiless sky; For liquor were bartered my corn and hay, For a drunkard's horse am I. With few to pity and none to save, I am chained to a life of woe. Albeit the brutes that curse and rave, The pleasures of freedom know. Ah yes, my heart will break some I i UK'. Then death. But 1 wonder why I must suffer thus tor a .Nation's Crime. Though a drunkard's hose am I. A Thankless Task. ( News and Courier. ) Four newspapers of Cuba have telegraphed Gen. Carranza, praising the stand which he has taken ir bis exchanges with the United Staten and assuring him that public sentiment in Cuba is with him. It would be interesting to know moro precisely what this means, for Cuban senti ment is probably typical of sentiment in all the Spanish-American and Lat in-American countries. If thc Cubans are applauding Car ranza's insistence that the United States must not exert any influence in tile disposition of Mexican inter nal affairs in this time of crisis, it appears that the Cubans forget very easily or else are unable to recognize facts. Have they forgotten the chaos from which tho strong hand of the United States saved them'' Or are they Ignorant that it was this coun try which set them on their feet'' O? do they fail to see tue essential sim ilarity of conditions in Mexico in i !. I I to conditions in Cuba prior toi I sits ? One would suppose that if there was anywhere in Spanish or Latin Am?ric? realization of the benefits to he derived by a uar-torn and dis tracted country from such assistance as the United States stands ready to extend to Mexico, thal realization would be found anion!; tho Cuban people. Yet we are apparently pre sented with the spectacle of Cuba applauding Carranza because he ls doing all that he can to prevent the United States from extending this assistance to Mexico. This Incident would bo illuminating if in such a matter illumination v ere needed. We do not need additional proofs, how ever, that the ask of playing "big brother" to a nation unable to man age its own affairs is the most ut terly thankless of t.isks.
