O.J WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2?, 1014, PREN ADVERTISING. lt is not often that The Courier (?tints in its editorial column an ad vertisement, and never for a money consideration. There are limes, how ever, winn a "free" advertisement is deserving liol only of a place, but of special mention, at the hands of a newspaper. We call attention to the following advertisement, which we clip from the Anderson Haily Mail. lt i-, worthy of considera! ion : "Por Sale ft.OOO bushels .minty raised white corn; $1 ! <>. h. Walhalla, or $ I OT, deliv ered at Anderson. C. W. A .1. H. IVailknight, Walhalla. S. C." rhal is an unusual advertisement for this section of country, or. for j iii?' matter of that, for any territory 111 South Carolina. And it Is n mighty good sign, loo, Elvo thou sand bushels of county raised corn from Oconee means r, .ooo bushels of the besl coin in the world, lt nm.ins more than that. Il means (hat Oco nee is "coming to her own" is rais ing sn Alden I corn for her own use ?ind has com to sell to others. li means thal the limo bas passed when carloads ol poor corn can be ship ped to our State from the West, thus draining Hie South the real corn hell of thc Knited States of millions Of dollars that should be kepi at home. Thc Courier hopes lo see the day when every farmer in Oconee will make every grain of corn, wheat, oafs and others of the staph- articles ol feed and food at home, and have some to sell. When that day conies prosperity will be with us to stay. AS TO RACE TRACK GAMBLING. i ........ ute i vulcanization and election of otllcers and delegates, passing the following very st l ong and sensible r?solu I ion : "Resolved. Thal il is the seilst? of die West I'nion Democratic Club ;hal race track gambling he abandoned within the State of South Carolina and that the executive officers of the State he relines ted to institute such actions, civil or criminal, as may ho deemed requisite or necessary to en foro- Hie statute law of the St ile prohibiting tho ame. Thc laws of our state already provide fully this remedy, but we arc sorry to know thal South Caro lina is almost alone amongst the forty-eight states of this Union which has not banished this nefari ous business from Its borders." M is very evident thal the winking at lawlessness in our stale is not be ing ignored in every quarter. Oco nr-e is a quiet, peaceable county, and ordinarily does not make any great demonstration, hut she may bo counted upon to rise against a long continued farce or any flagrant fail ure upon the part of high officials to carry out the laws of tho Stale. There is a deal of common sense shown in the r?solution as passed hy tho West [Inion local club, and Hu- question taken up by thai club maj well bo given consideration by others. There is much of this "rottenness In Den mark" nnd tho stench is becoming nani eons. The Courier is in receipt ol' a copy of Hie Helton Journal, Volume I. No. I, and is Riad to welcome ii lo thc exchange table Tho Journal pre seats quite a neat and newsy appear ance, and Hie people of Helton will do weil ii. .ive it liberal patronage. Claude A.
