The wind, lightning and thunder was ac companied by a slight trace of hail, though not sufficient to do any dam age. A largo oak tree at the rear of the residence of .1. A. Steck was ?truck by lightning and felled to the ground, the bolt having struck about four feet from the ground, shivering the entire trunk Into splinters. Sec tions of the bark of the tree, 18 to 30 Inches in length and several inches wide, were knocked a distance of about 100 reel against tho barn to the south of the residence, and some smashed through the windows in the residence, 30 or more feet to the northeast. A peculiarity of the stroke was that the lightning seemed to expend its energy in making exit .through thc roots of the tree, split ting them into shreds and tearing up the ground. There was a large as semblage present to witness the ceremony and to extend congratula tions and good wishes to the young couple. Mr. and Mrs. Kelley are both well known to a wide circle of friends, who wish for them a full measure of happiness and prosper ity. The ceremony was performed by Kev. L. M. C. t. f.-adv. -The many friends of Frederick Thellkuhl will be glad to learn that ho is rapidly recovering after a sud den and severe attack of illness las', week. Mr. Thellkuhl was at work in his field at his home here when ho wnB suddenly stricken, but man aged to get to the house, when he was completely overcome with se vere pains in tho stomach. Medical assistance was at once summoned, hut lt was discovered that nothing but an operation would give relief. Drs. Thode, Roll and Sloan held a consultation, and Dr. Rlack. of Greenville, was summoned to per form an operation for tho removal of a growth that had attached Itself to the intestines. Tillinghast conducted ser vices at St. John's Episcopal church last. Monday night at 8.30 o'clock. There was a good congregation pres ent to hear the Bishop preach, and bo delivered a sermon full to over sowing with truths that furnished great range for thought and contem plation. The service was greatly en joyed as a whole, and excellent mu sic was furnished through the cour tesy of mein bois of the choirs., of other churches. At the close of thc service a short congregational meet ing was held looking to a better ar rangement tor services in the fu ture. Plans were laid for a continu ance of services on the second and ? Hirth Sundays in each mont*',' at heretofore, but in the future ont Sunday each month will bo dey o tee entirely to the Walhalla church, thai giving three services a month. Shelor, who will have active charge of the remod eling of tho Baptist church. Work will bo begun at an early date, and lt is hoped to have the work in pro gress by Juno 1st. The contract has been turned over to Otto Kaufmann, who will have charge of the remodel ing. Tho church will he completely changed in appearance inside and out. One of the prominent features of the new plans is the addition of a gallery over ono end and on both sides ol' the building, materially in creasing the seating capacity of the building.
