ADRIANOPLE AT LAST TAKEN. Fortress Known tx> Have Fallen Bulgar?-City in Flan uv?. to London, March 26.-Adrlnnople has fallon after one of the most stub born defenses In the 'history of .war fare, and TiliHtalja, according to a telegram received by the Bulgarian legation at London to-night, has suf fered a Uko fate. 1 The Information regarding Tcha talja may refer to the town of that name and not the fortifications, al though it ls possible the Bulgarian* carried all l>efore them. Shukrl Pasha, the dofender of Ad rlanople, handed hi? sword this af ternoon to Gen, Savoff, tho Bulgarian generalissimo, not, however, before carrying out his threat to destroy tho town rather than let lt fall Into the hands of tho Bulgarians. From all accounts the arsenal, stores and much of the town aro In Hames. It was also reported that Shukrl Pasha had taken his o'.n life, but tliis proved untrue, as after de ciding resistance was longer pos sible, he sent word to Gen. Savoff that, ho was burning rho city. Gen. Savoff has appointed a com mandant of the city to maintain or der. Gen. ivanoff, who commanded the forts around Adrlanople, will en ter tO-morrOW, while King Ferdinand will follow shortly. The battle which precoded tho sur render commenced Sunday night with a three hours' bombardment. Later 'the besieging troops In the east ad vanced at. double quick under the glare of searchlights to attack the advance works at Maslak. After a flerco defense lasting throughout Monday the Turks retired from the forward forts. Accounts of the battle which come from Bulgarian forts make no mention of the Servians. There seems .to bave been a great deal of jealousy. The Servians, who have only issued a brief report of tho capture, divide credit with tholr allies. According to a il is ) mt di received at Belgrade from Mustapha Pasha, the sacrifices were very heavy. The Servian Thir teenth and Bulgarian Eighteenth regiments were blown up by mines, and other regiments sustained great losses. Tho garrison, which was estimated at from 40,000 to 60,000, will prob ably be found to have been considera bly reduced. You oannot greatly chango the quantity aud character of your com laud between now and planting time. It ls too late to plant a legume crop on lt, and too late to add much to tho supply of manure you will have for it. These things were settled eway 'back last year in most cases. There are, however, two or threo thinfr-M you can and should do right now that will go far toward making your crop a profitable one. I. In the first place, you can get good Beed to plant. No matter whether you plant one acre or a thousand, you cannot u fro rd to plant seed of un known parentage or quality. The Cost of high-grade seed is only a few cents to the aero, and such seed, used instead of that selected from your own or a neighbor's crib, may easily give an Increase in the crop of threo or five or even more bushels per acre. ( You cannot make a better investment. When you buy seed corn, buy from a breeder who really breeds; don't .buy an untested variety grown on an entirely different soil and in an entirely different climate; don't pay a fancy price for seed grown In ?a blg-yleldlrg patch unless you know something of the way this has been selected, and don't look tor the cheap est seed you can find. II. In the second place, haul out all the manure, all the accumulation in the barnyard and stocklols, all the humus-making material of any kind you can gather about the barn or the 'homo grounds, broadcast lt on your land and work it into the soil. You need it there, and you need it away from the buildings and the neigh borhood of the home. III. Finally, and especially, prepare a good seed-bed before you plant. You are no going to got your corn land too fine or too mellow, no mat ter 'how often you work lt. Don't plant corn among clods or lu a hard baked soil and expect it to thrive. Corn is a pretty particular plant and ?insists upon good treatment, arid the cultivation given beforo plani ng is cheaper and easier than that given afterwards. Put the 'harrows to work on the corn land and keep them at it when ever you can. When you have tho ground in flue shane, give it one ?nore stirring just for luck. It will pay. If you have ?. disk harrow1 and a smoothing harrow or a plank drag, you can go over a lot of ground in a day, and every time you go over it, you will be adding to the corn crop. Better delay planting a little than plant in a poorly prepared seed-bed; and better do a little extra work now than a lot next summer.
