Death of Hampton Poole-Dr. Stone cypher Has Well-Trained Dog. Westminster. March 5.-Special: Miss Fmlly Zachary, of Cross Hoads, is visiting Mrs. F. W. Cannon. J. S. Carter lias just returned from Baltimore, New York and other Northern markets, wnere he has been buying ids line of spring goods. Dr. J. H. Stonecypher, ono of our prominent druggists, was out hird hunting one day last. week. Ho re ports that his dog caught a large turkey. However true this report may he, there's only ono conclusion that suggests itself to those who are familiar with his well-trained dogs,) namely: The doctor and his dog, af ter killing the maximum number of birds as prescribed by law, decided to try their hands on a turkey, that by chance came their way. This ex periment cost the doctor $2.50. Gartrcll Marett, of Lavonia, has recently accepted a position as trav eling salesman for tho Stonecypher Morse and Cattle 'Poule Company, of this place. Mr. Marett is a sales-1 man of experience and wo feel con- ' fldonl ho will make good In his new posit ?on. lt is with deep regret that we j chronicle the death of Hamp Poole, who died of miningitis at bis home on cotton mill hill last Saturday evening about 7 o'clock, Ile was about fourteen years of age, and had been working in Hie mill for some time previous to his illness and death. Ile was a son of Mrs. Poole, who married a Mr. Cox some time ago. Mrs. Vada Marett and family have moved to Seneca. We are very sorry to lose this estimable family from our midst. They went through the conn Eulogy of Colt lt. A. Thompson, I deem lt a great honor to any State, county or community to claim such a noble, high-toned Christian gentleman of the old ante-bellum type as Col. Robert A. Thompson, of Walhalla. Having known him since my boy hood to be a safe counsellor, a man for whom I have the highest esteem and reverence, I can truly say that Iiis tranquil life has been an inspira tion to me, and worthy of emulation. Being well Informed, a close student of human affairs, and the only sur viving member of the. Secession Con vention of 18G0, lt ls always a pleas ure lo meet and converse with this venerable gentleman. May his lifo be spared ninny moro years, as a tranquil stream, shedding his benefi cent influence on mankind. May Cod abundantly bestow heaven's richest blessings on his declining years, and when lils summons shall come may he hear the glad coin maud, "Thou good and faithful servant, en ter into the joys prepared for the ri gb I eons." In penning these words I do so with the belief that it is a common error of mankind, and especially pro fessing Christians, io fall to speak a kind word or to neglect to pluck and scatter tho fragrant roses in the path way of the living, as they are worth less to the recipient after death. I have often thought, in seeing a pro fusion of beautiful roses heaped upon a casket, that if they, or eVfen one. could represent, a kind word spoken to the living, what a changed life it might have wrought. Greenwood Suffers Loss of $1-10,000. Guests Had Narrow Esca?os. Greenwood, March 3.-Tho Ore gon Hotel and Its block of stores wore totally destroyed by fire early this morning. Where once stood the famous hotel is now a mere smol dering bea]) of burning debris with fragments of ruined brick walls and useless chimneys standing In tho midst. The fire represents a propertly loss of approximately $140,000, with per haps less than half that amount In insurance. The loss to the town is far greater than the figures would indicate. The Oregon Hotel has been one of tho town's greatest features ever since its establishment. Fortu nately no lives were lost, though some who escaped did so "by the skin of their teeth" and with little on save their natural skins. The origin of tho fire ls unknown. Jt was discovered about 2 o'clock this morning.. A negro bellboy was tho first person aware of fire. The smoke filling the downstairs corridor arous ed him. At. that lime the fire was In the ?tore room. The proprietor, II. S. minson, inclines to tho opin ion that spontaneous combustion may account for tho fire, certain ma terials in this room making it possi ble for tho fire to gain headway very rapidly If such were tho case. This room is Immediately above the holler room. "Things a bit queer at home. I'm afraid. There's your wife sticking her tongue out ai you." "Oh, no. She gnvo mo a letter to post, and she's merely reminding me that I must put a stamp on it first." You judge a man not by what ho promises to do. but by what he has done. That ls the only true test.
