MASKBD BANDITS HOLD THAIN Near Memphis-Approaching Engine Gave Fright to Robbers. Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 1.-Six masked men held up westbound Rock Island passenger train, No. 43, known as tho Arkansas-Oklahoma Express, midway between Momphls and Huriburt, Ark., early this morn ing, ransacked mail pouches, ilred seven nitro-glycerine caps into tho "way" safe of the express car, which not only tore away the safe doors, but wrecked the car, and in tho midst of their work were frightened away when a switch engine, search ing for the over-duo train, approach ed from Huriburt. lt is declared that little of value was secured. The men were last seen making their way toward the Mississippi river. Huri burt is eleven miles from Memphis. Crew Intimidated. The train was boarded when lt slowed down near Huriburt. Intimi dating the engine crew by a display of weapons, tho men forced tho en gineer to back tho train several miles, stop to permit the express and mail cars to be cut from the coaches and then to draw the forward sec tion of the train a short distance to where the robbery took pla"e. In the meantime other members of the train crew, as well as express messen gers and mall clerks, wore brought to submission. System to Robbers' Work. When tho detached cars w?re brought to a standstill each of the men set. about a task. One began gathering registered mall and ano ther to set the charge of explosives, while others stood guard over the train crew and passenger coaches. Thc robber having charge of the ex press car selected the larger of the two safes for his attack. This one, it happened, contained only the least valuable packages. When the charge was fired the ends and sides of tho ear were splintered and the entire front, of the safe blown away. Just at this moment the switch engine came Into sight, and the robbers took to their heels with only what they could hastily grab as a reward for their work. The train proceeded after two hours' delay required to transfer the express matter to another car. Posses hogan to search for the men soon after daylight. Secured Little Loot. Chicago. Nov. 1.-P. O. Molche:, vice president of the Rock Island road, said to-day that so far as ho could learn tho robbers got nothing hut'the registered mail, that the safe blown open was practically empty. Experiments conducted at tho South Carolina Experiment Station during Hie past year show that where cotton anthracnose occurs fall plow ing is very essential. A number of diseased cotton bolls were collected last fall and burled at various depths in the soil. These bolls were dug up from time to time during ~e winter and spring and cultures were made from them in order to deter mine how long the fungus which causes the disease would live in such bolls. Wo found thal the fungus does not seem to live in these bolls longer than the middle of March. Many of these bolls, when taken up and examined, were found to contain quantities of bacteria; worms wore also found in some of them. These facts lead us to believe that the or dinary agencies of decomposition de stroy tho anthracnose fungus when the bolls in which the fungus ls liv ing are buried in moist soil. At the same time that those bolls were buried a number of badly dis eased stalks were pulled up and car ried ont to Ibo edge ot* the Held, where they have been loft unmolest ed since last fall. Diseased bolls were taken from those stalks from time to time and examined. The fungus is still alive In Ibo diseased bolls on Hmso stalks. The cotton in the held from which these bolls and stalks were collected last season were very badly diseased. The stalk chopper was run over these stalks as soon as tho cotton had all been picked timi the land was turned about ten inches deep, lt was then harrowed ?ind sown in crimson clo ver. The clover was plowed under early in April and tho land was planted again in the same variety of cotton that was used last year. The seed for this planting bad boca care fully soloctod from a field where there was no anthracnose. This sea son there was no anthracnose at all in this (leid. These results, then, indicate that fall plowing is going to be a great bell? in combatting anthracnose. Tho fact that the fungus is still alive in stalks which were not turned under emphasizes thc Importance of such plowing. These are facts which it is well to keoi) in mind while it ls still time for fall plowing. H. W. Barro, Botanist.
