Madison, Oct. 10.-Editor Courter: Wo notice thal there Is a great deal being said and written In regard to the bumper cotton crop, and all the writers advise the farmers to hold their cotton for :i higher prlco. Now, we don't pretend to know anything about the matter except what we have learned by experience and observation. Our experience has taught us that the holding of cotton ls all right, provided we hold at tho proper time; and if we don't hold our cotton at the proper time the holding movement is a miserable failure. The most effective plan of holding cotton, and the proper timo to hold it, is to hold the cotton seed out of the planter at planting timo, and put corn, peas, oats, etc., in the planter Instead of cotton seed. But if wo fail to do this, then we should hold our seed cotton and not have it ginned. If we have our cotton ginned and baled, and then hold it, why, the bear speculators know precisely how many bales aro being held; they have only to get the gin report, and then deduct the number of hales that have been sold from the total number ginned, and they have it exactly. Then if the farmers happen to reduce the cotton acreage? 20 per cent next year, the speculators will say. "Ob, well, you have four million hales sur plus left over from last year's crop. This four million bales that you are holding will ovor-balance your re ductions." Don't you 3eo where they have us In the hole? Rut If wo hold our cotton in tue seed on the farm, and do not have it ginned, then it is impossible for the speculators to know just how much we have on hand. I Now, brother farmers, If we are 1 not going to plant more grain and less cotton In the future, or hold our I cotton at the proper time, as sensi ble men should do, why, then I make a move that we all get together and go up to New York in a body and ? 1 have (he Hon. Theodore Price legally i I appointed guardian for the cotton j 1 growers of the South. Ho has been i ? acting as guardian for us for about ! I fifteen years. But a self-appointed j I guardian always makes himself a nuisance, and nobody likes him. Let us have him legally appointed. J. A. Cook. Items from Tamnssoo. Tamassee.
