"Sorrow, I havo learned to love you; You, af least, aro true; j 1 havo Iud a chanco to prove you 1 havo lived with you. When by othor friends forsaken, When Hie world grew drear, You were leal, and woro unshaken You were over near." Some of ufe have not always hud a smooth life, and some aro now in the shadow. We have sad memories of times when we journeyed in company with those who will never share our counsol or hear our step any more. Many modern homes ?lave been bro ken up. No bntterin&-rain smote the door, no Iconoclasts crumbled the statues, no flame leaped amidst the curtains, but so far as all tho joy and merriment that once belonged to our house aro concerned, the homo has departed. Armed diseases came .down upon the quietness of the scene-scarlet fevers, consumptions or undefined disorders came and seiz ed upon some members of our fam ily, and carried them away. In our trouble and sorrow we forgot the comforting words of Jesus to His disciples concerning his death, "If ye loved nie ye would rejoice because I go unto the Father." We went about weeping amidst the desolation of our once happy homes, thinking of the bright eyes closed, and thc noble hearts stopped, and the gentle hands folded, and we wept until jwe hail no more power to weep. The world waB not so bright as it once was. The days were sad and dreary, the nights dark and long. Loneliness shrouded everything. There was darkness-thick, impenetrable, shud dering darkness. But liston! God did not leave us there. Mercy 3poke. As we took up the cup and wore about to put it to our lips, God said, "Let it pass," and forthwith, as by the hand of angels, another cup was put into our hands; lt was the CU I of God's consolation. The Fathei put his left arm under our heads and with his right hand he poured into our Hps the wine of his comfort Jt was then that we began to realize "What a friend we have in Jesus, All our Bins and griefs to hear." Then we looked at the vacant chair and looked at our troubled hearts and we looked at the Lord's chastise mont, and we said, "Even so, Father for <;o it iee/ne th good in thy eif.tyi.' Av the mist? of il ? tit ness clea rei away a gentle voice whispered 'What ! fbi Uv.u knowor.t 1.0? new biij thou ?hali know beiv.ui<.'..' Sad donly we were possessed with a spiri similar to that which possessed Max well Cornelius when he wrote: "Not now, but in the coming years It may be in the better land Weil read the meaning of our tears And there, some time, weil under stand. Weil know why olouds Instead of sn; Were over many a cherished plan Why song has ceased when scare begun 'Tis there, some time, woil undei stand." The Lord took our loved ones froi us, but he is going to shelter thei and care for thom hotter than w could. He is going to array them i whito robes, and with palm branche they will bo all ready to greet us f our coming home. "O, I think I should mourn o'er ni sorrowful fate, If sorrow in heaven could be, If no one should bo at the beautlfi gate, . Walting and watching for me." Our loved ones have gone Into ai othor country, and if we want I reach their companionship we mut take the same road. They ropentec we must repent. They prayed an trusted In Chirst; so must we. Un lt not been for Jesus they would Inn all perished, but Christ com forte them and said, "I am the way," ar they bookit. The path that th? trod was often paved with thorn many times they were tired, sick ai hungry, but they remembered ll promise, "To him that overcometh will give to oat ol' the tree of li which ls In the midst of the paradi of Cod." Ii is through much tr Ibu) lion that wo are to outer into tl kingdom. But "When the last feeble step has be< taken And the gates of the city appear, When the sound, like tho minimini waters, Holls down on our listening cars; When all that now seems so myst lions Will be bright and as elear as t day, Then the toils of the road will see nothing, Whon we get to the end of tho way "Who aro these under tho altar tho question was asked, and tho 1 sponso came, "These aro they whl cane out of great tribulation ai have washed their robes and ma thou white In tho blood of t Lamb." Golden Text: "Pride goeth before deetruc the companionship of our loved ones who are departed, there ls a Gettys burg, there is a Waterloo-war with the world, the flesh and the devil. We have either to conquer our troubles, or our troubles will conquer us. Those who have won the victory over death are witnessing the battle from the bright hills of heaven. They are watching to see if through Christ we can take the fort. They know that upon this battle depends whether we will ever join them. Let us remem ber that every inch we gain puts us further on toward thal heavenly re union. We are "more than con querors through him that loved us, and his grace ls sufficient" to defeat the enemy. "Through many dangers, tolls and snares we have already come; 'Twas grace that brought us safo tinta far, and graco will lead us home." Sometimes we feel as though we could never-take another step, as though we could never look up again. But listen!. "All things work to gether for good to them that love Cod"; "Weeping may enduro for a night but joy cometh In the morn ing,;' "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." Let us wrap ourselves in these pre cious promises. God says ho will not cast us away because the music has gone out of our souls. "The bruls ? d reed he will not break," and "As one whom his mother com fore th so will I comfort you." O troubled souls, Cod will see us all the way through, and when we come down to tho Jordan of death wo can repeat with Spafford these words: "When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows, like sea-billows, roll Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, lt is well, lt ls well with my soul." -M.
