JOHN imOWN'S 1M0ATH. Vapor ?f December 8, 185?, Contains Some Illuminating Comments. c ?ff ney, Jua. 20.-Ono of tho mp?t Interesting piucos ol" literature that hay ever come Into tho possession ot' any ono In this section reached a re porter in this city this week in the shape of a copy of Tho Christian Ad vocate, dated December 8, I860, in which appears an account of the hanging of John Brown, ot Harper's Kerry. This is probably the only newspaper on record in which ap pears this account. The imper, had lt been read by every one who has requested lt, would now be in tat ters. Considering its age ol' r>8 years it is in remarkably good Shape, and the printing can be easily read. The account as lt appears in the columns of-the publication follows: Tile Story. "Charlestown, Va., Dec. 7.-The execution took place at a quarter past ll. Ile died apparently very easy, and his body was taken down after bein? suspended 35 minutes. "At ll o'clock the prisoner was brought out of the jail, accompanied by Sheriff Campbell and lils assist ants and Capt. Davis. Ibo jailor. A ?mall wagon containing a white pine coffin was driven up on which Brown took his Beat. Six companies of In fantry and rifles ami one company of horsemen, the general and his staff, numbering 25 officers, headed the procession and moved towards the place of execution. Drown was not Accompanied by any minister, as lie desired no religious ceremonials, either lu the jail or on the scaffold. "Tlie military on the Held were formed in two hollow squares. With in the Inner one was Ibo scaffold and between the inner and outer lines the citizens were admitted. Firm on Scaffold. "Ile mounted the scaffold willi a linn step, ills arms were then pin ioned by tlie sheriff. Ile then bade farewell ('apt. Davis and Sheriff Campbell and al half past 1 1 o'clock the trab was sprung. His body was placed in the collin and is now on the way to Harper's Kerry to be delivered to bis wile. "The reporter ol' Hie Associated Dress telegraphed yesterday io Gov ernor Wise for permission to attend the execution. The reply was that the Governor declined to accede to the request. No facilities wdll be ex tended to reporters. "After remaining for four hours with her husband, Mrs. Drown was escorted back to Harper's Kerry al ?I o'clock last night, where she will ?wait (he reception of her husband's body." Another Story. lt seems that just here in Hie story hy some fault of the typesetter en gaged on this story that he omitted a new date line, as the following ls a preface to the story proper: "No one will he allowed near enough to tile place of execution to hoar any . .'marks that may be made hy H row ii. "Tho work of erecting the scaffold was commenced yesterday. lt is tinderstood that members of the press will not he admitted inside ol' Hie line .so thal no report can be made of bis speech ia case Drown should make one. "To-day several persons who are editors (d' abolition newspapers in the North were ejected from the cars for Harper's, Kerry. Tliey had purchased tickets and were very anxious to pro ceed, but were refused on account of an arrangement entered into between Governor Wise and the presiden! of the road. "Boston, Dec. 2--Resolutions wore offered in tho Massachusetts Legisla ture to ?uljoni:? on account of tho execution ol' Drown. Tiley were voted down with great unanimity." The paper goes on in the editorial column to give the following: "Tho Boston Courier has an excel lent, scholarly, conservative article on the 'Brown .Madness' and the in sane root thal bred it." The Courier's View. "That portion of our community standing outside of the Boston 'Fra ternity' and not frequenting the 'Mu sic Hall' has lately been disgusted by the piece of profanity conveyed In the following paragraph: " 'In the course of his brilliant lec ture on 'Courage' at the Trenn . t Temple on Tuesday evening Ir.st Ralph Waldo Emerson said, with marked emphasis, referring to Capt. John Brown, 'Tho saint whose fate yet hangs in suspense, but whose martyrdom is shall be perfected, will make the gallows as glorious as the cross.' ' " 'Tho enthusiastic audience is eas ily understood. Many of the vast au dience were no doubt as faithless an indecent in the actual altitude of their minds as was the speaker and applauded bim for that reason, lt is also an Incident of what may he call ed 'rhetorical retribution.' Some men feed their audiences on peppery, high seasoned morsels, till tho natural ap petite has been ruined. And then the poor victim of his own conceit has to tax his brain to supply his morbid, vicious audience till its healthful en ergies are exhausted and style sinks with thought. The most notable ex ample of this is the declaimer whose desk Mr. lOnierson seems to have sup plied. But here conies another where the fall Is from a nobler height, and the ruin ls more mournful. Tho speaker might have said, if he thought so, that .lohn Brown's death would be a Christian sacrifice or an honor to the cross. But no, that would not do. The 'Immense audi ence' heated up to the profanai lon point, would have considered that tame. So he must throw Into their hungry mouths this blt ol' Impious, extravagant absurdity. Truth avenges herself for insults, even in our words.' " The paper, besides carrying the foregoing very Interesting account, also has an account ol' the (loath of Washington Irving, which had occur red a few days before the publication ol' the paper.
