18? PERSONS ON DEATH HOIJIJ. Thc IV Aro Thousands Homeless and Bailly hi NIMHI of Food. 3 Naples, Italy, Oct. 27.-King Vic tor Emmanuel arrived here unan nounced to-day. His coining was not wholly unexpected. He was accompanied by his first aldo, Hen. Hrusati, Admiral Garelli and Count Mnltlolo-Pasqualini, min ister of the royal household. The authorities were able to make a piore definite estimate of the fatalities caused by H,c cyclone, ti dal wave and eruptions of Mount Vesuvius and Mount Epomeo. Known deaths are: Cetrara, 80; V?cete, 31; Majori. '20; Casamicciola, Island of lschia, 12; Amalll, 10; Resina, 7; Madon na Grazie, li?; Minori, 4; Laceo Amena, 3; Montecorvino, 2; Torre Del Greco, 1 ; total, 180. Thousands are homeless, and the most serious problem now is to pro vide these with shelter,, food and water. The movement of supplies ls difficult, because in many places thc roads have been washed out. Most of the towns requiring aid can be approached from the sea. Admiral Leonard!, minister ol* ma rine, had a narrow escape from death on the Island of lschia to-day. In attempting to get a close view of the effect of thc eruption from Mount Epomeo, he approached too close to the bed of the volcanic stream and sank to his waist In mud. Ills plight was discovered by soldiers, who rescued him. Hutting on thc Henkes. (Washington Host.) A Columbus. Ohio, dispatch con talm this hy no means startling tid ing: "The Paulding Times, one of the Influential Democratic newspapers in that D?mocratie Northwest terri tory, barf bolted the nomination of Judson Harmon for re-election as! Governor of Ohio, lt opposes Har-1 mon (?n the ground that Harmon op- | posed Bryan In his three Presiden- j Hal campaigns, and thaHhc is a man. whose every act as Chief Executive of the State has shown that he is in ' sympathy with corporations and their, interests." lt serves to disclose Mr. Bryan's hand If thal were needed, for Mr. ! Bryan laid his cards down face up ? last week when he declared that he would sooner vote for an insurgent or a progressive Republican than a standpat Democrat, though he really meant that he preferred any Repub lican to a Democrat like Harmon, of . Ohio, or Wilson, of New Jersey, The incident serves to make por tinent the following anecdote, that is exceedingly popular in circles I made up of railroad trainmen: "A brakeman who had not been , long employed was going up a very : steep grade on his first mn. With unusual difficulty the engineer sue- j ceeded in reaching the top. At the station, looking out of hi.s cab, the' -engineer saw the new brakeman and j said, with a sigh of relief: T tell you what, my Ind, we had a joh to got up hore, didn't we?' 'We cer tainly did,' said tho brakeman, 'and If I hadn't have put on the brakes we'd have slipped back.' " It ls now become the ofltce of Mr. | Bryan ' ? put on the brakes lo stop the p rufe ?ess of his party on the way to success at the polls. He has open ly bolted the nominee of his party for Governor in his own Stall', though that man was for many years one of his most ardent political sup porters. The political situation In Ohio isa picture of the general political chaos in :{() slates or mon?. The Bryan men are in revolt against the Demo cratic ticket, and it would seem that the colored voters are ready to bolt the Republican state ttcket. November, tillite likely, will bring surprises.
