ATLANTIC, Airmail Will Sail Westward from TenerllYe Next February. New York, Oct. 22.-Tho next at tempt to cross the Atlantic in a bal loon will probably bo made on a westward course-the opposite from that' attempted by Wellman. Tho expedition will be that of Joseph Knicker, formerly of Chicago, who lias been engaged for a year In tho preliminary plane for his airship trip. L) Tucker's dirigible, the Suchard, is approaching completion at Munich. The entire equipment will bo shipped to the Canary Islands at tho end of the year and tho start westward ls scheduled to bo mado fi'om Teneriffe next February. Brucker's' first scheme was to start from Cadiz. Tho adoption of Teneriffe 13 a starting point will save him s^von hundred miles of travel over the ocean. The Slichnrd ls 200 feet long, and baa S,?")00 cubic meters gas capacity. Two 200-horse pefwer motor." will drive ioe airship hy means 'of two propellers. The balloon will carry a 35 foot life-boat, with a gasolino motor equipment. Brucker hopes to sail with favor ing northeast trade winds to . Porto Rico or Haiti. If necessary he can make a de scent there and then continue his voyage over Cuba to Now Orleans. He has a novel method of overcom I lng the effect of the sun':; rays on ! the balloon which In the ease of tho Wellman expedition sent the Amerl I ca bounding up to a height of 3,BOO i feet. He proposes to meet this not hy an equllihrator, as planned by Melvin Vaniman, but by filling tanks with water to act as ballast during the warm hours of the day and emp tying them again as the cool of even ing conies on. To do this he pro poses to ship an automatic pump at tached to the engine of tho ship, j which will take In and discharge water through a long bose hung from the lower part of tho balloon.
