Last Wednesday afternoon Gro ver Crenshnw, while engaged in his usual work in the machine simp at the Walhalla Colton Mill, was pain fully hurt by having a small piece of steel strike him in the hand. Innes fe Co.. of Charleston, S. C., wholesale and retail shoe deal ers, shot and killed himself in bis room at Hoffman House early to-day. The merchant was discovered lying in bed with a bulbi wound in Hie side of his head. A revolver lay nearby. Mr. Innes came here with his bro ther from Charleston lo undergo au X-ray operation, which was said to be a minor affair. lt is said that ibo merchant worried over tho ope ration which he was to undergo to day. The collapse was directly beneath the educ of the Hudson Boulevard, which, at thai point, runs along (he inner line of Bergen Hill. He, with several youthful com panions, were boating on tho .reai i and had been in bathing. The boys were standing on a big rock putting on their clothes, when ono of them dared /chellas to make the fatal leap. Head foremost he hit the water and (hoy waited some tinto before he came Up for the first time. When he did tills, however, it was seen by those standing on the bank ho was in a serious predica mont and .lames Tallanlls, one of his compan ions, jumped into the wnter to save the life of his fellow countryman. Ile could swim but little, however, and the weight of the body of the drowning man was too great for bim and he was compelled to abandon it In midstream. The body sank for the third lime and thiree hours later was found some distance from the scene of the tragedy. KU.ld,I) OX CAR TRACK. W. M. (Jossett Meets Horrible Death in Spartanburg. Spartanburg. Sept. ll.-Lying on tho track, supposedly drunk, W. M. Oossett, a card grinder in one of the cotton mills at Glendale, was run over and instantly killed by a trolley car shortly before midnight last night. The accident happened near Hast Spartanburg. The body of the dead man was horribly mutilated. (Jossett visited Saxon Mills, where bo formerly lived. yesterday, and look the car for home about nine o'clock. He fell in with two friends, who tried lo got him to go on with them, but this he refused to do when he found he would have to change cars at the car shed. A littlo later he got off at Goodlett's Crossing, near the scene of tho accident. Xotli ing is known of his whereabouts tin til he was struck by a car something over an hour later. Two negroes got off the ear with Gossett and when bo was killed there? was some suspicion that be bad boon robbed and placed on the track in an unconscious condition, though there was nothing to substantiate such a t heory. Coroner Turner held an inquest over ibo dead man this morning at io o'clock and a verdict in accord ance with the above was found. COLD MILLION STOLEN. Lend Substituted for Precious .Metal Aboard Steamship Humboldt, Seattle, Wash.. Seilt. II.-Cold hallion valued at $57,500, part of a consignment of $170,ono from the Washington-Alaska Hank, of Fair banks, to Hie Dexter Horton National Hank, of Seattle, on the steamship Humboldt, was to-day stolen in tran sit. Lead was substituted in the strong box. Discovery of the theft was an nounced to-day. The stolen gold weighed 250 pounds. When it left Fairbanks ou a Yukon river steamer for Dawson and White Horse, the gold was contained in three wooden boxes and was in the care of the Alaska Pacific lOxpress Company. When the boxes were opened by the ! Canadian customs officers at Daw son tho gold bars were found to be, as stated, in tho express company's papers. The boxes were opened ilga In at the Knited States assay office in Se attle Friday noon and the theft dis covered. One contained pigs of lead instead of gold. The seals of the boxes were intact when they reached the assay office and it was evident that the robbery had been commit ted on board ship. The gold was insured against loss by tho express company.
