Tho second of a Borlos of delight ful entertainments for tho popular bride-elect, MIBS Annie Verner, was that given by Miss Eloise Strother at ber beautiful homo on Main street last Wednosday. Assisting Miss Strother in receiving were Mesdames Strother, Roll and Darby. The color scheme, pink and green, waB beautifully carried out in deco rations of pink roses and booklets of the same pretty shade, hand-painted in delicate greon, and entitled "A Floral Wedding." The twenty-four questions wore answered by tho !iain|t ol' flowers, and at tho close of tluftBtttest Mrs. Rauknight and Miss SmWPwore found to be the only ones who had guessed thom all correctly, and on drawing for the prize Miss Smith was the lucky winner of a dainty piece of cut class. The hostess then gracefully presented tho guest of honor, Miss Verner, an ex quisite cut glass pickle dish. Each guest was then asked to write her favorite recipe In a book, which was given to MIBS Verner as a souvenir of tho occasion. A delightful salad course, with punch, was sorvod, and pink and green mints In dainty dishes were on the tables. Miss Strother, always a charming hostess, was at her best on this occa sion. Those enjoying her hospitality were: Mesdames Rauknight, Hum phries, Reid, Vernor, Dodd, Reil, Darby, and Misses Verner, Harrison, Strong, Smith, Hughs, Drennocke, Sallie and Anna Stripling. Mrs. J. A. Stock and Mrs. Sidney Adams entertained at tho home of the. former, on Thursday of last ?',,(,%. In honor of Miss Annie Vernor, one of the attractive June brides elect. The house was prettily deco rated in daisies, the color shemo be ing yellow and white. At tho close of quito a clever contest the prizes were awarded, Miss Julia Maxwell being the lucky winner of one. Miss Verner was then presented with a dainty piece of cut glass. The reception hall, where Mrs. Rauknight received ber guests, was attractive with many potted plants, pink roses and popples. The color scheme of pink and white was effectively carried out In the dainty score cards and delicious refresh ments. In the solving of a clever original contest several of the guests proved themselves equally apt. In the draw for the prize Miss Janie Neville was successful and was presented with a pretty piece of china. Miss Verner also received a dainty piece of the same ware. Not until the fluni inning was tho game decid ed, when the regulars managed to score the winning tally. Score ll to 10. New Hope disappointed a fairly good crowd by not showing up, but the second toam were formidable op ponents. For tho first timo this season tho regulars wore in uniforms. Neat, attractive gray uniforms, with blue cnps and stockings, hnvo been secur ed and tliey look exceptionally good. The boys are grateful to their many friends who subscribed toward tho purchasing of these uniforms, and will do their best playing next Saturday, when the Seneca team will come here. In three games played between Seneca and the home club, Seneca won the first two, while Walhalla captured tho third, so a close contest ls scheduled to result on Saturday. William Sidney Porter, Texan by birth, but reared at Greensboro. N. C., known best under bis pen name of "O. Henry" as the writer of short stories, died last Sunday at the Poly clinic Hospital, New York, where he underwent an operation last Friday and never rallied. The nature of his ailment was not made known. Mrs. Porter, who had been in South Car olina, was summoned by telegraph, but did not reach her husband's side until after lils death. Mr. Porter was born In Texas 42 years ago and began his journalistic career on the Houston Post. Before that he bad been cowboy, sheep herder, druggist, and an extensive traveler.
