Pant at Pied mont Tuesday, she is pleasantly re membered here as Miss Mamie Dal rymple. She leaves a husband and eight children and a host ol' friends to mourn her death. Mrs. Jesse Campbell and J. F. Campbell spent the past week-end in Anderson. C. S. Shirley, Tugaloo Herring and Otis Holland have returned from Florida. Miss Neta Bruce, of Westminster, is visiting her aunt, Miss M. A. Bruce. H. I), and Jule Grant visited their brotl\er, W. A. Grant, ol" Anderson, recent ly. Kev. and Mi's. M. E. Per body, of Westminster, attended the Easter exercises at the Presbyterian church Sunday and the former made an ad dress. The exercises were greatly enjoyed by all present. Mrs. J. S. Toxaway, March 28.-Special: The egg hunt given by Mr. and Mrs. Mark Smith Saturday evening was enjoyed by all present. A Sunday school was organized at this place on the morning of tho 27th. !.. C. Pitts is superintendent. Everybody is invited to come. Mr. and Mrs. Newt Adams, of the Oak Grove section, were guests of Mr. an! Mrs. A. H. Adams recently. Elbon Cobb had a tenant house destroyed by fire on his place on the 23d. lt is not known how the lire originated. The house was occupied by Jeff Heaton. Mrs. A. B. Smith is on the sick Hst. Her many friends hope to see her out again soon. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Spencer, of Madison, were visiting in this section recently. N. C. C. . -- - - ? Killed ut An "Egg-l'ickllig." St. George's, March 2ti.-Charley Wlinberly was shot and fatally wounded by John Pendarvis on the Indian Field section of the county, about eight miles from here, lalo this afternoon. Tho tragedy occurred at an egg picking. Particulars regarding the affair are meagre, bul lt appears that. Pendarvis and Mack Winiberly, a nephew of the slain man, were en gaged In a dispute, when Wimberly Interfered, Pendarvis ls said to have been cut on Hie arni before he fired tho fatal shot. Wimberly lived a Short time after the shooting. Medical aid was immediately sum moned, but lt ls not known whether a physician arrived in time or not. Pendarvis ls In lall, having surren dered himself to the sheriff immedi ately after the affair. Let everybody come and bring well-filled baskets. W. T. A CRUELLY TREATED WIFE Ends Her Own Life and Blame ls Placed Upon Husband. Camden. March 27.-The tragic death o Mrs. Sam Kirkland was wir ed the dally papers Friday. Since that time fuller details have been obtained, which are shocking in the extreme. In brief, Sam Kirk In nd was a drinking man, according to all ac counts, and when under the Influ ence of liquor was a turbulent fel low, and treated his wife brutally. On Thursday he ls alleged to have asked her to get in his buggy with him; that he wanted to talk to her. A neighbor, who saw them In the buggy, ls reported to have said that their actions were suspicious, and he detected that Kirkland was drinking. Ile is said to have left home with a jug of whiskey and imbibed freely of the ardent spirits, When he re turned home in the evening his wile's face was swollen, and there were scars and bruises upon her. Her bonnet was lying in the foot of tho buggy in a bloody condition. In her desperation she ls alleged to have said that she could not stand lt. any longer; so she saturated her hair with kerosene oil and set fire to it, dying as a result early Friday morning. Coroner Dixon was notified, as was also Solicitor Cobb, who attended the Inquest. The verdict of the coro ner's jury was "that Mrs. Delle Kirkland came to her death by self inflicted wounds caused by her hus band." A warrant was accordingly issued for Kirkland, charging him With murder, and ho ls now confined In jail In Camden to answer for the death of his wife. Mrs. Kirkland was the mother of seven children. Mr. Hurley Critically III-Children Enjoy Easter Egg Hunt. Conneross, Mai ch 28.-Special: Mlss Rena Hunslnger, who has been conducting the Poplar Springs school during the winter, closed her school Friday, after a very successful term. She delightfully entertained her pu pils Friday afternoon with an egg hunt at the school house. The eggs were hidden near the school building by Miss Hunslnger's sisters, Misses Hurt and .lane. Miss Rena is an able teacher and a young lady of rare in tellectual ability and refinement and we feel that success will be hers. She will open school this morning at Oak Q rove. Misses Minnie lintier and Minnie Vaughn, of this place, spent last Wednesday in West Union visiting at the homes of Wm. Reeder and D. S. Addis. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. C. robbs, of .Walhalla, were visitors to relatives here recently. Misses Annie and Mindie Abbott are visiting relatives In Seneca this week. The children of the Conneross Sun day school attended the egg hunt given by Jessie and D. Barker at their home here Saturday afternoon. There were over 100 eggs hidden, and the little ones seemed to enjoy hunting very much. Our B. Y. P. U. mel Sunday even ing at the usual hour and had a very Interesting meeting, conducted by A. N.
