Mr. Hughs is an excellent farmer and substantial citizen, and he and his family will add materially to our community in religious, social ; and business circles. -The play, "Union Depot for a Day," will be presented at Wagener Theatre at 8 o'clock on Friday night, January 7th. This play will be given by the best local talent and under the auspices of the Monument Association, lt is a copyrighted play and has been given with great suc cess in many of. the towns of our own and surrounding States. He was taken suddenly sick last Sat urday night, after having been ex posed to the severe cold and damp weather during the day, when he had been out in the country hauling cern and fodder to town. Ile is suffeiing from a severe attack . f grip, and has been confined to his bed since Sun day. His friends hope for his early recovery. -Go to W. M. Brown, Walhalla, for lime, cement and roofing-best grades. tf - Last Sunday Rev. J. C. Yongue preached his last sermon as pastor of the Walhalla Methodist church. It was a very touching occasion, and at the close of the service almost the entire congregation remained for a short willie to bid Rev. Mr. ' -Migue farewell. It has Indeed been long willie since the departure of one of our local pastors lias been so deeply and universally regretted. Rev. Yongue and family will leave to-nior row for their future home at Pick ens. They carry with them the best wishes of the entire community. In the service last Sunday the retiring I astor was assisted by Rev. John G. Law, I). D., of the Presbyterian chu rch. - A band of energetic women. Mesdames Bell, Darby, Jaynes, Sea born. Hughes, Herndon and Bauk night, were entertained on December 7th by Mrs. J. B. S. Dendy at a charming little bi-weekly sewing party. Kris Kringle days being so nearly at hand, the guests, soon af ter arrival, drew forth emeries-the symbol of the club-scissors, needles anti thread, and began busily plying stitch upon stitch. "Each with a thought of a loved one dear," there were secrets a-plenty to exchange, which, with the genial hospitality of Mrs. Dendy and the presence of a new member, Mrs. E. L. Herndon, whom the club feels ls quite an ac quisition, the gathering was made merry. When trays appeared bear ing banana Jelly with whipped cr?ai i and fruit cake, those who had so "Improved each shining hour," fold ed aprons and put away bag and basket to partake of the dainty re past.
